REGINA -- A 37-year-old Regina woman is the latest victim of a homicide in the city, having been found seriously injured early Friday morning.

The woman — whose identity has not yet been released — was pronounced dead in hospital just before 3 a.m., just over an hour after police were called to a house at 1858 Atkinson St.

According to information from the Regina Police Service, someone at the house — believed to be an adult male who received what were described as “relatively minor injuries” during the same incident — called at 1:47 a.m. to report an injured person at that address.

Police found the 37-year-old woman inside with serious injuries and EMS took her to hospital where she was soon after pronounced dead. Although her family has been notified, police have not yet released her identity.

Police secured the house and, within minutes of beginning the investigation, were led to a second house on the same block where three people were taken into custody without incident. While charges have not been laid at this point, police said an adult male and two adult females were being questioned by investigators.

There was no additional information immediately available on what role, if any, they might have played in the incident and police have not released details on what might have led to the homicide.

“I think it’s still pretty early,” Popowich said about the investigation.

On late Friday morning, Forensic Identification members could be seen processing the scene, one member appearing to take video of the entrance of 1858 Atkinson St., a small white house nestled among similar older homes on the block. Yellow police tape extended along several residences, beginning at 1858 and ending a few homes to the north at 1842 Atkinson St. — the house where it’s believed the three people were taken into custody.

City police spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich said members will continue to hold the scene until “they’re satisfied that they’ve photographed and documented everything that they need to and that they’ve seized anything that might potentially be evidence.”

At the end of the block, several neighbours gathered to watch the activity. The neighbours — who declined to be interviewed or provide their names — described the area as generally a good place to live, although they said the two houses in question have been the scenes of some problems in the recent past.

One man said an older couple moved into the house at 1858 Atkinson about 1½ years ago and that neighbours have seen and heard women yelling at each other in the backyard from time to time.

Neighbours also described numerous people who don’t live at either of the homes coming and going from both locations on a fairly regular basis.

While Popowich could not speak to what, if any, problems police might have responded to at the houses in the past, she said the 37-year-old victim isn’t believed to be a resident of the house in which she was fatally injured.

The Office of the Chief Coroner has ordered an autopsy, expected to happen early next week.

This is Regina’s fourth homicide of the year.
