So many good books, impossible to decide. If I shut my eyes, reach into the flickering shadows of my mind for just one book, out pops...

The Story of O.

Just kidding.

... out pops...

Rohinton Mistry's 'A Fine Balance. That story had a powerful effect on my mind.

Haggis! You dog. Ever read "Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns"? ;) Not exactly fiction but some interesting reading, none the less.

No, but I recognize that title.

There was also a movie made of the Story of O. I think there might be a new version out, but the original movie, the one I saw, was banned in both Canada and the States. It was a good movie. Actually, there are scenes in Emmanuelle that are quite O-esque.

There are way too many books I really really liked. I don't have a favourite.....currently.

I really liked
Memnock The Devil and Taltos by Ann Rice
Pilgram - Timothy Findley

Yeah Memnock the Devil is a great book!!

I'm a sucker for Harry Potter though, the 4th and 5th in particular!

And trashy romance novels like 'The Notebook' by Nicholas Sparks.

Ohhh and 'The Bride Stripped Bare' is AWESOME! I recommend all you ladies read it! Actually, I'm pretty sure the fellas would like it too....its tasteful porn! Lol

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. Truly a phenomenal fantasy series, beats most of the drivel that's out there. And it's *accurate* for fantasy.

Watch on the Rhine by John Ringo. Aliens invade the earth, humans with other aliens fight back. The particular novel is set in Germany with another trilogy set in the USA (the other trilogy isn't as good).

Worldwar by Harry Turtledove. Aliens invade in WW2, enough said. I mean seriously, Nazi's and Commies, vesus space aliens! It sounds very trashy, but it's a fun read.

Also by Turtledove, How Few Remain, and The Great War. The South wins the civil war. USA joins the central powers in WW1 and the Confederacy joins the Entente Cordial. The next two trilogies are just plain boring, but those two are good.

The Difference Engine by Gibson and Stirling. Babbage's industrial engine works and sparks a scientific revolution during the industrial revolution.

And now, the Classics. 1984, Animal Farm, Beowulf, War of the Worlds, The Importance of Being Ernest. And that should do for now.

My favourite book from Childhood is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

My favourite book as a "grown up" has to be Lamb: The Gospal of Christ according to Biff, Jesus's Childhood Friend by Christopher Moore. I would literally laugh out loud while reading it. It's brilliant.

Some recent "gooders" that I have read:

Deafening
by Frances Itani
A Handsmaid Tail by Margaret Atwood

But i love books.

Deafening by Frances Itani is a book I know well. My wife went through nursing school with Fran. "Deafening" is a great book. She teaches us things about being deaf that we could never know.

RE: What is everyone's fa

# juan... I was just moved by the way in which the central character views the world, the way a simple description had details that myself as a viewer would never look for. It taught me to look at things from a different perspective.

gosh-- i didnt know hugo chavez wrote les miserables

“So long as Laws shall exist which creates Hells in the midst of civilization. So long as Men are degraded, Women ruined and Children afraid. So long as there shall be Ignorance, Poverty and Wretchedness on this Earth. Stories such as this one must be told.”--Victor Hugo

But this sounds so much like Chavez. :D
