I used to chase salmon in the rivers on the coast steel head too i loved it .Sadly i moved to the interior and chasing trout just dosen't do it for me .Nothing like getting in to a big northern coho with ten pound test in a raging river.I used to contrat at the mill in alberni we used to sit on the recovery boiler roof watch the salmon runs it was quite the display

Well since I live on an island covered by lakes and rivers, and surrounded by ocean. There really is alot of different kinds of fish. Mostly now I just fish for steelhead. But I go salmon fishing quite a bit with nasty brothers. There are such dumb asses tho, it gets me cranky :p

Me and fly-fishing types don't seem to get on*. It's sort of understandable; they've stood patiently for hours, waiting for a bite, and then I come splashing by in my canoe, scaring off their prey. "Chill out, man" I say,"there's plenty more fish in the sea." That's not a phrase I'd normally use - I do it for devilment; fishermen/women in the UK are generally a conservative bunch, and having their day ruined by a smartarse hippy doubly pisses them off  . According to UK law, land can be privately owned, but not the rivers that run through it. As we're a small country, the land around good fishing rivers is nearly always privately held, and access is expensive. Rich folk get really agitated when they've paid wads for access to a "private" river, and then get confronted by waterborne hoi polloi. If you ask me, they're missing the point: If fishing teaches you anything, surely it's patience? (In truth, I try to slip by as quietly and discreetly as possible, but it's seems some people are never satisfied).

*Present company excepted  Steelhead: That's rainbow trout isn't it? Yummmmmm! - I like it coated in seasoned oatmeal (the Scottish way!)

Steelhead a sea run trout, I never considered fish breaded in oatmeal, but your right it does sound yummy! I catch and release henry, only ocassionly do I keep one, and it usually for a friend :p
I want them to be around for a long time.

Yes I know all about the calvin kleins of fishing. The same people have tournments. Phonies, enough said :p

I like the mysterious and entrancing feeling fishing, and the stealth, it invades my imagination :p Through the steelhead I connect to the universe, ecstasy! Epecially when you do everything right 8)

Mom that is so cool what you wrote about Port Alberni, I know the river you are talking about the somass river, the river of my childhood. :D

RE: What book are you rea

Joining the topic late but here's what I'm reading. Right now I'm reading a lot of the JRR Tolkein books. I'm enjoying them a lot as they are greatly composed, the storyline is interesting and not to mention he made his own language.

Right now I'm just about to start "Unfinished Tales". Reading the cover it seems really interesting. So far I've read The Hobbit, The LOTR Series, and The Simarillion. My favourite out of the ones I read so far has got to be The Simarillion. I enjoyed it a lot more than the others as it was the beginning of it all so it was very appealing.

I just picked up 3 by Ian Rankin, all part of his Rebus stories. If I like them only half as much as the TV series,it will be money well spent!

Realia by Will Aitken. A very bizaare funny irreverant and quirky book that caused me to snort on the ferry Sunday Morning.

I have since learned that I must be careful what I read in public.

Oh man I could run away with rebus, I really like those Ian Rankin books the old scottish jester turned me on to him.
Twila you gotta read some books by this women, she is so funny...amazing stories...a wonder because what would a women dectective do with a dectective agency in the middle of africa. Who would her clients be? and what kind of cases does she solve. You will be delightfully surprise. Mma Ramotswe ROCKS! Botswana's first female detective 8)

"It's the detective as folk hero, solving crimes through an innate, self-possessed wisdom that, combined with an understanding of human nature, invariably penetrates into the heart of a puzzle. If Miss Marple were fat and jolly and lived in Botswana--and decided to go against any conventional notion of what an unmarried woman should do, spending the money she got from selling her late father's cattle to set up a Ladies' Detective Agency--then you have an idea of how Precious sets herself up as her country's first female detective. Once the clients start showing up on her doorstep, Precious enjoys a pleasingly successful series of cases.

But the edge of the Kalahari is not St. Mary Mead, and the sign Precious orders, painted in brilliant colors, is anything but discreet. Pointing in the direction of the small building she had purchased to house her new business, it reads "THE NO. 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY. FOR ALL CONFIDENTIAL MATTERS AND ENQUIRIES. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED FOR ALL PARTIES. UNDER PERSONAL MANAGEMENT."

Only one day after buying the book,I'm nearly 200 pages in! And I was wrong,it's not a Rebus novel, but a spy thriller by Ian Rankin, called "Watchmen". He's as good as LeCarre ever was.

Just finished Life of Pi in a few days... couldn't put it down! Original, entertaining, and well written. Have been struggling through Thomas Friedman's Lexus & the Olive Tree on globalization - really don't like the style of writing bouncing from one anecdote to the next. It's funny too how some of the technology he mentions is completely superseded now.

A few people mentioned the DaVinci Code. I read this book a while ago. I found it entertaining for some of the historical references and the significance of the number phi. The writing itself was not that good, nor was the narrative.

Mike I know conservatives can read :p And I don't have a problem with conservatives, what I have a problem with is steven harper and the gang from the alliance that joined the party. It will be their undoing. I actually feel sorry for the conservative party, they made a huge mistake joining with the alliance. No one wants to go back to the stoneage. Don't have to take my word for it either, canadians said so in the last election.

One of my brothers is a card carrying conservative, but who knows for how long :p he is very unhappy with the way the party is headed  I have friends that are conservative, and we get along great. What I do not like are "neo conservatives" anymore than you like commie liberals. You seem like a good minded "conservative" I won't mind reading your posts at all, in fact I might even learn something.
