I watched another great movie last night.
The Seasoning House is a 2012 British horror and revenge thriller directed by Paul Hyett. It is a shocking, violent, blood-drenched neo-horror.
The movie is set in the Balkans in 1996 during the Balkans War, although it is filmed entirely in London.
A battle rages in a town - which is suppsoed to be a town in the former Yugoslavia but is actually filmed on a London housing estate - and a young deaf and mute girl called Angel is captured by a group of soldiers. They force her to watch as they kill her mother.
She is taken captive with other young girls and taken to the "seasoning house" - where young girls are prostituted to the military. Each girl has her own room and each day they are drugged and tied to the bed whilst soldiers viciously rape and beat them.
Initially planned to be put to work as a prostitute like the other girls, Angel instead becomes the assistant to Viktor, the man who runs the brothel.
During the day she is given the duty of drugging the prostitutes and then cleaning the prostitutes up after their often violent encounters with various men, but at night she secretly wanders the walls and crawlspaces of the house, listening, spying......
Eventually Angel befriends a girl named Vanya, and the two become close. But then, through a grill in the wall of Vanya's room, Angel witnesses Vanya brutally raped to death by a burly soldier.
Angered by Vanya's death Angel undertakes brutal and bloody revenge - especially after the squad of soldiers responsible for her abduction and the murder of her family arrives. Let the blood flow.......
The acting alone is worth a watch. Rosie Day (as Angel), Kevin Howarth (as Viktor), and Sean Pertwee as the soldier who ordered the killing of Angel's mother (Sean is the son of Jon Pertwee, who played the third Doctor Who between 1970 and 1974) give amazing performances.
