His Ninth did rather better.

He's still going strong today, even amongst the youth. My six month old niece Jasmine is a Beethoven fan. Whenever she starts to get grumpy her mummy and daddy play Beethoven on the TV and she goes quiet, listening intently and watching the shapes moving across the screen and enjoying it.

She's not always going to be a Beethoven fan, though. Her Uncle Blackleaf will ensure that. She's going to be a metalhead by the time she's five.

Groove Armada - "At The River" (1997).

The London drum and bass duo comprising Andy Cato and Tom Findlay had a Top 20 UK hit with this in the year the Labour Party swept to power for the first time in 18 years and Princess Diana was killed in a car crash.

My claim to fame: Andy Cato's little sister was once my girlfriend.

The Stranglers - "Golden Brown" (1981)

The London rockers - still performing to this day - scored a No2 UK hit in the year Prince Charles married Princess Diana with this beautiful work of art.

The main body of the song has a triple metre waltz rhythm, with beats grouped in threes, but the instrumental parts add an extra beat to create a phrase of thirteen beats.

I'm not too sure what that means, but these four geniuses created a work of absolute beauty...

The Beatles - "Penny Lane" (1967)

Released as a double A-side single with "Strawberry Fields Forever"; written, of course, by Lennon and McCartney; and the lyrics recall the sights and characters along Penny Lane in Liverpool that McCartney recalled from his upbringing in the city.

The most successful musical artists in history scored a No1 around the world with this in many countries, but the song was their first to to not reach No1 in their native country since "Please Please Me" in 1963.

McCartney performing three 1969 Beatles songs - "Golden Slumbers", "Carry That Weight", and "The End" - on US TV show "Saturday Night Live" earlier this year.

He looks good for his age.
