The Rolling Stones - "Ruby Tuesday" (1967)

The London rockers scored their fourth UK No1 with this aesthetically pleasing piece of art.

Incredibly, Mick Jagger and Co are still going today...

The Pretenders - "2000 Miles" (1983)

Released in November 1983, the British/American band was moderately successful at No15 in the UK charts with this song about the death of their guitarist in 1982.

However, despite being a song dedicated to the loss of a friend, it has since become a popular British Christmas anthem.

Chrissie Hynde famously fronts the band. Born in Ohio, she has since become a British citizen...

Jona Lewie - "Stop the Cavalry" (1980)

This heart-wrenching tale based on true events relates the story of a young British soldier in a trench in WWI at Christmas longing to get back to the girl he loves as he ducks German machine gun fire.

The song highlights the pointlessness and tragedy of a war which killed millions of young men over a few miles of Flanders mud.

Despite the dark lyrics, the song has become a Bit ritish Christmas anthem...

Stan Rogers died sitting on a plane being refueled that burst into flames and exploded. After that they made people deboard before fueling.

Cincinnati, 1976 iirc
'83. Reports had it that he was assisting in evacuation of the plane when he was overcome.

Miss him. Never understood why Canadian folk singers (the Rogerses, Gordon Lightfoot) were all such beautiful baritones, while Yank folk singers (Dylan, Seeger, Ochs) all sounded like they were in the terminal phase of emphysema.
