BIG (er, I mean ), British government encourages local officials to reduce speed limit to 20 mph. Deaths and injuries in 20 mph zones rise 24%

from Fark of course...

Road casualties in 20mph zones increased by almost a uarter in 2011, according to official figures.

The number of people killed or injured on roads in built up areas with a speed limit of 20mph totalled 2,262 in 2011, up by 24% from 2010.

Meanwhile casualties on 30mph roads were down by 1% from 2010, recorded at 125,494 in 2011, according to data from the Department of Transport.

Councils have been given powers to set 20mph zones in a bid to improve road safety.

Clearly, the lower speed limit results in less than 1/60 the number of injuries and deaths. Lower speeds reduce casualties.

Britain has the safest roads in the world. A lot of it has to do with the fact that we wisely drive on the left, which is safer than driving on the right.

How about some proof of this ridiculous statement.

Yes, because most women are right handed and sitting on the left of the driver makes hand jobs rather awkward causing many cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. Thus British men can pay closer attention to the road.

Why? What difference does it make? This is an honest question & I'm curious.

I dunno.

I'd cut him some slack, and took it as entirely tongue-in-cheek.

I mean, come on - it's the whole toiletpaper off the top or bottom debate on a different plane. And you know how brits thrive on pretense. lol Obviously if we don't agree with him then we prove we're mere colonials.

yeah, blackleaf, driving on the left would be safer... if you only had the steering wheel on the left. ha!

A wise person would ask what percentage of roads have a 20 mph limit vs a 30 mph limit.
