Wal-Mart creates jobs for many folks in lots of communities. Plus it's very convenient to have them, particularly the 24 hour centers since they are a 2-in-1 supermarket and department store.

I am however steadfast against unionizing Wal-Mart. People pick where they choose to work, so if one doesn't like working at Wal-Mart under their rules, then that person is free to work elsewhere.

If Wal-Mart ever does unionize, then prices there will undoubtedly go up.

So here's the new plan: Since Walmart itself is responsible for a HUGE chunk of the US/China trade deficit, and considering some of the other threads, I have a plan.

We'll get Walmart to start sourcing all of their crap from Africa. That way, the Americans who are afraid of China will be satisfied; the right wingers who hate them red commies will be satisfied; the left wingers will now have a reason to buy everything at Walmart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on Walmart!!!!!!!!! Jump on that Bandwagon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think Africa needs to enslaved again, Ten Penny. They are stil shaking off the effects of the first several attempts we made at it.

For the second time in a week, a B.C. city has rejected a proposed Wal-Mart store. Faced with overwhelming public opposition, Campbell River city council voted Monday night against plans for a large store along the river.

Campbell River's rejection comes on the heels of a decision by Vancouver city council to stop plans for a big-box store on Southeast Marine Drive.

Opponents of the planned store in Campbell River said the estuary of a heritage river, where there has been extensive habitat restoration, was no place for any large commercial development.

Opposition to Wal-Mart's plans for the Island community peaked last week during a three-night, 15-hour public hearing where more than 200 speakers urged council to reject Wal-Mart's rezoning application.

Members of the Campbell River Indian Band Council, who hoped to purchase the land and lease it to Wal-Mart, were among the few who spoke in favour of the project.

There were almost 400 people in the audience on Monday night for the vote, roaring their approval as each of the councillors spoke against the Wal-Mart application.

"I feel that the people have spoken and that you are asking us to protect the river," said Counc. Morgan Ostler. "In the very simplest of terms, it is the right thing to do and therefore, I will not be supporting a change in the zoning."

Wal-Mart spokesperson Tiffany Duzita says Wal-Mart wants to be in the community and will be looking at alternatives.

"I won't deny that I'm not disappointed. I like to win, but you've got to respect what council has to say," she said.

Does anyone have a link for this story? I want to pass it along to a few serious walmart protesters.

My sister lives in campbell river, she told me that everyone was up in arms about wal-mart going in there. There is a wal-mart in courtenay 20 minutes away...so you can still shop for the "cheesy" if you have to :p

I'm just going to throw this out there and hope it don't hit the fan.

If the slave labourers aren't working at slave labour for slave labour pay what will they be doing? Is $0.50/hr not better then $0.00 per hour? If there was better employment out there for them then they'd be at it right?

Up until a year ago I was working in the "fashion" industry. Last I heard the labourers were making USD$1.40. Yes, 1.40 is better than 0.00 as Twila said. These people would be on the street, with no homes. They are provided with homes, clothing and food for themselves and their children. They could have nothing.

Feel free to pay $60.00 for a t-shirt if you want, but you won't.

Guess What? Soon, there won't be any more small businesses there

Wrong, totally wrong. WE have had a Walmart for several years, and most small stores that were there before are still here. For the ones who closed, Walmart was not a factor in their closing. My job allows me to say this.

And you are buying crap! no quality..just crap.

Oh get real. That is so far from true it is ridiculous. I have seen the exact same product in Walmart at another store for almost twice the price.

What you also forget is that there are many employees of Walmart who are local citizens, and I suggest you ask them if Walmart should go. They need and like the jobs.

Walmart abuses people at home and abroand to stuff their pockets with blood money. They are scum.

Which just goes to prove you have no idea of what you are talking about. Why is it that when someone without a union who can provide cheaper prices for consumer goods is always labelled as bad in Canada? Some of us consumers actually like being on the right side of the fence occasionally.

As far as I know Woolco wasn't unionized. Canadian Tire isn't unionized. Zellers isn't unionized. The thousands of small businesses that Walmart pushed out of business were generally not union shops.

Just goes to show, Blue, that you haven't a clue.

Well, lets see. Woolco left our community many years before Walmart. Canadian Tire has opened another store since Walmart came to town, and Zellers has expanded since Walmart came to town, and has better products now than they did before.

Thousands is an exaggeration of reality, and again, your OPINION is not a fact.

In fact, Superstore is now coming to town AFTER WALMART, and Costco is a thriving store in our town.

You don't have a clue when it comes to reality.

Your opinion isn't a fact either, Blue. In fact, you have no facts. There have been thousands of small businesses pushed into bankruptcy when Walmart came to their towns, Blue. That's not a secret...Walmart comes in and the small places shut down.

It's also not a secret that Walmart has been caught locking employees in overnight. One guy broke his leg or arm and couldn't get out to go to the doctor until morning. They have been caught employing illegal aliens for less than the minimum wage. They've busted unions. They've sued governments in an attempt to get labour laws rolled back.

Now that's all stuff that's been in newspapers and magazines, Blue. Maybe you should try try reading something before you try to form an opinion of your own.

Thousands? Again a total exaggeration. Again, speaking from local experience, Walmart has not been the direct cause of some businesses closing.

The funny thing is, years ago, MALLS were being accused of the same thing that Walmart is now being accused of. I bet you shop at a mall on occasion.

Your arguments would have better impact if we were not so overtaxed to support your looney left wing programs. Given that so much of our money goes to taxes, whether from our income or by way of other government taxes, the citizens support these kind of stores because it saves them money. At the end of the day, if I can buy the same product for $20 less at Walmart than I can at another store, I will keep the $20 in my pocket instead of giving it to someone else.

Called Free Enterprise. Something you abhor, I know.

you can't change the truth by covering your ears, Blue

At least I have ears that listen. You have ear plugs. Walmart employees lots of local citizens, and provides good quality goods at an affordable price.

Somehow, I fail to see how this is bad, other than in your opinion, the unions cannot get their greedy little paws on some money they are not entitled to.
