I can think of Two towns Dryden, On.where a Walmart opened and slowly dried up the samll town businesses. Selkirk,Mb where a Walmart has just opened and the businesses in the downtown district are beginning to close up shop.
Do you honestly believe that one busines with a team of Tax lawyers pays more in taxes than a group or groups of small businesses? Especially when that company is known to use as much pressure as it can to achieve the lowest price from its distributor. Don't you think they would drive even harder at getting any advanatage from the government?
Your argument is exactly why jobs are going overseas. That twenty dollars you saved just became forty you have to pay back to the government to support people on welfare and unemployment. This prevailing attitude sends our manufacturing industries out of North America. When jobs go the tax burden becomes heavier.

As far as I know Woolco wasn't unionized
I guess the Alberta Advantage protects us from that

When it took over Woolco in Canada, Walmart closed the 7 unionized stores, costing Canada 1,000 jobs. Walmart also converted Woolco's garages to oil and lube operations and asked mechanics to take huge wage cuts and fired 500 well-paid Woolco warehouse workers.
Some were (I believe Saskatchewan had one) and the ones that were Wal Mart declined to buy as you know, people who work for Wal Mart can't make a half descent wage, its against Wal Mart policy.
I guess the Alberta Advantage protects us from that
What advantage is that? The lowest minimum wage in the country or the oil companies wanting to bring in cheap labour from other countries?
Better check your facts. Alberta just raised minimum wage a couple of months ago, about in the middle of the pack. However, the reality is that virtually no one pays minimum wage in Alberta anyway. Both my daughters, with no experience other than a high school student, entered the work force at at least $1 per hour above minimum wage.
Don't believe everything (anything?) you hear on the CBC.
Hmmm... Walmart pays what $7.50 per hour...if that. A fair manufacturing job pays $12.50 ph Which job contributes more to the economy? The maufacturing job will pay more back to the goverment in taxation, by the factory that is still open and the worker themself. It also increases the buying power of an individual stimulating the economy. This to is an oversimplification

I think not said:People change their jobs everyday. If they don't like where they work, who is stopping them from changing?
Whats the difference between McDonalds and Wal-Mart? They both pay minimum wage. People that work in low wage jobs are usually unskilled workers.
Having that said, governments need to increase the minimum wage, the current levels are ridiculous. Shame.

My younger sister works at McDonalds for 7,55$ an hour. Thats our minimum wage, btw.
No clue what it is for Alberta though.
