The bombings were in the Russian heartland, including Moscow. They stopped suddenly when operatives of the Russian security service were found and arrested as they planted military grade explosives in an apartment building.
The case was quickly dropped and the Russian media stopped reporting on it. Several Russian politicians, journalists and prosecuters have died by murder or accident after they began investigating the crime.
