The Vichy French was the Puppet Government installed by Hitler After the defeat of France. Though in control of police and remnants of the army and navy at the beginning their power eroded quickly as the war wore on with military units joining De Gaulle's Free French.

It is interesting to note that after the war Pierre Laval, one of the main leaders in the Vichy government was executed as a traitor. Phillippe Petain, Laval's compatriot and one of the great French heroes of World War I, was spared execution due to his service to France in World War I.

Of course, the Quebec separatist movement is a form of resistance; mainly because it resists reality. It never occurs to Quebec nationalists that if they can separate from Canada, then pro-Canada Quebecois can separate from Quebec, and that would include large parts of Quebec with English speaking majorities near the Ontario border. Then, there is the economic reality of all capital fleeing the province and Quebec having to deal with one-quarter of the national debt. It is not a future I would wish for.
