The Rafales aircraft that the French fly from their carrier is a far more modern and capable aircraft than was flown from the old Harrier carriers. Sure, they did yeoman's service over the years .. Even fought an air war in the South Atlantic but they are subsonic, 1960s/70s technology and their time has come. This appears to be a limit to the "ski jump" carriers in that it restricts you to just one type of fighter. The jury is still out if the F-35s that the R.N. has as there only eggs in their basket for the to new carriers are any good. The ski jumps combined with VTOL aircraft saves having a catapult system but it seems to restrict their capacity to fly newer, more modern aircraft types over the life of the ship. That's part of what ended the reign of the Harrier Carriers.
