White House, House Democrats on cusp of finalizing a revised North American trade deal, a major achievement for Trump and Pelosi

A key party to the talks, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, said that there was a deal and he planned to meet with his executive committee Monday afternoon to discuss it.

“We have pushed them hard and have done quite well,” Trumka said in an email to the Washington Post.

Winners and losers in the final USMCA deal

Source: WaPo

According to Wapo the biggest winner is Trump

President Trump – This is a clear win for the president. He got a legit, comprehensive deal done with two foreign countries and Democrats who are currently trying to impeach him. He can also say he delivered on a key campaign promise: To renegotiate or “terminate” NAFTA. The deal should be a positive for the U.S. economy, another boost in an already improving economic picture for 2020. It also gives him confidence and momentum in his trade battle with China.

It goes without saying that Trump will claim a victory.

Big victory.

Maybe biggest ever.

It will be interesting to see how these labor inspections work.

That falls under the heading of I'll believe it when I see it.

BTW Mcconnell said the senate will not be taking up USMCA next week which means they won't get around to it until after the Christmas break.

North America trade deal faces setback as Mexico objects to U.S. labor inspectors

Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Jess Seade has accused the United States of blindsiding Mexico by deciding to send up to five U.S. attaches to monitor labor conditions as part of the treaty. That decision was included in implementing legislation sent to the U.S. Congress on Friday.

Mexicos Senate overwhelmingly approved the treaty on Thursday, just two days after it was signed by the three nations negotiators in the Mexican capital. But the labor issue has since blossomed into a political controversy, with critics charging that Seade was careless or naive.
