As you age that nice little muscle that keeps all that acid in your stomach starts to loosen. When it loosens up enough, up comes the acid just like it did when we were infants. You can be on a diet of milk and oatmeal, if (and when) that muscle loosens the acid is coming up.

Take the PPIs or endure the pain and consequences of stomach acid constantly going up your esophagus and throat.

A genius Iraqi professor in surgery, Dr. Khalid Naji, once said [before his death]:

"The excessive grief, sadness and sorrow --> will lead to the development of either Duodenal Ulcer or An*al Hemorrhoids."

So the psychological factor is more important in causing the heartburn which when continues will lead to peptic ulceration mostly duodenal ulcer.
The frustration or feeling of deep and excessive grief will lead to the heartburn.

The cold natural milk without sugar is a good way of getting rid of the mild heartburn.
In addition the roasted or boiled beef or sheep meat without the fat is another way of getting rid of the heartburn.
The boiled egg may also be beneficial in this respect.

The sweet pastry and desserts in addition to the fat will increase the heartburn (in addition of course to the pepper and spices.)

The water is of little or no effect in reliving the heartburn.
