NASA's Hubble Finds Most Distant Galaxy Candidate Ever Seen in Universe
01.26.11

› Related Briefing Materials

Astronomers have pushed NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to its limits by finding what is likely to be the most distant object ever seen in the universe. The object's light traveled 13.2 billion years to reach Hubble, roughly 150 million years longer than the previous record holder. The age of the universe is approximately 13.7 billion years.

The tiny, dim object is a compact galaxy of blue stars that existed 480 million years after the big bang. More than 100 such mini-galaxies would be needed to make up our Milky Way. The new research offers surprising evidence that the rate of star birth in the early universe grew dramatically, increasing by about a factor of 10 from 480 million years to 650 million years after the big bang.

Every time I hear the 6 thousand year thing it reminds me of the religious view of what God supposedly
said. Well when did God say it and who recorded the first day so we all know the fact that the date is
true? How do we know that the furthest stars out there are at the edge of the universe? The little blue
lights in the distance might be the last of the light that we can see. How can we put a measure of
time or distance on something that we don't even know how big it is? Yes we can guess at the present
or the known distances and visuals which means it is one heck of a lot bigger that we think and in
fact it is older than six thousand years, but age and distance have not been determined by a long shot.

Does that mean we are 0.5 million light years from the edge of the universe? Is that the bottom or the top?

God never said it. It was James Ussher who figured out a chronology based on a careful analysis of the Old Testament and decided the creation happened in October of 4004 BC.
... it is older than six thousand years, but age and distance have not been determined by a long shot.
Age is pretty well established as about 13.7 billion years, and the edge of the observable universe is about 46.5 billion light years from us.
