Eggshell Statue Building

The town of Dulwusky, Manitoba collects all the eggshells cracked throughout the year and has an eggshell sculpture competition every Easter Monday at the Legion. It replaced a former, less popular Easter pastime, ‘How many frozen cow patties can you carry from goal line to goal line?’ event at the local arena.



Toronto Priest Climbing

The Hispanic community of Toronto scours the city for the tallest priests and Hispanic RC little people (midgets) climb them and sit on their heads. The winner is the fastest climber, who sits on the priest’s head the longest.



Vancouver’s Ugliest Nun

They say beauty is only skin deep, but ugly is to the bone. Lapsed Catholics armed with cameras search wherever they can to find and take pictures of the ugliest nun. This is a very popular event with Asians too. They get to use the latest high tech cameras. They also fear no retribution from the RC church.

While I have you on the phone, here are some other uniquely Canadian things.

Redcliff, AB Culture Arts

Nearby Medicine Hat has always been jealous of the cultural arts centre located in Redcliff. Redcliff boasts some of the finest musical and theatrical companies in western Canada. It has three museums, one symphony and one musical theatre. A subway with over 50 km of track. A dinosaur introspection centre and Canada's largest outdoor skating rink.

It is home to the Redcliff Symphony Orchestra. A world class musical organization and training centre that has helped teach the likes of Luciano Pavarotti, Maria Callas and Placido Domingo.

Beginnings

Founded in 1884 by Cyrus Redcliff, the area was originally settled because of it's lush, warm climate and miles of pineapple fields. The only place in Canada where they could be grown at the time. Local native bands grew pineapples and taught it to white settlers.

Because of a burgeoning agricultural need, the mighty South Saskatchewan River was rerouted in the early 1900s. Settlers using handtools altered the Saskatoon/Calgary flow, bringing it into southern Alberta and right past the town of Redcliff.

The Redcliff Cultural Museum

Is a heritage museum that boasts over 5 million display pieces of western art. The only Canadian museum that is bigger is the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Ontario.

Little Known Facts

Canadian Prime Minister (1895 - 1979) John Diefenbaker was actually born in Redcliff, not Neustadt, ON.

Singers Michael Buble, K.D. Lang and Canadian band Toto were all born in Redcliff.

No one in Recliff has ever died of malaria. In fact, It is the province's only "malaria free" zone.

Canadian writer Stephen Leacock was not born here, but was inspired to write many of his humourous stories in his years at the family cottage overlooking the S. Saskatchewan River.
