Why not? Tit-heads in Washington and Annapolis do it now. Or didn't you know that most gun restrictions are by the states, not the federal government?
I'm quite aware of that. Still doesn't change the scenario. The EU "govt" in Brussels isn't a federal govt either. Yet they certainly can dictate what Britons can and cannot do within their borders.

The annoying part is the inconsistency. In Maryland I just barely have the right to carry a one-inch fingernail cleaner. Six miles from my place, in Virginia, I can carry a freakin' rocket launcher to the grocery store, if that happens to suit my fancy.
I think it's weird that I can bring a handgun across the US border but brass knuckles are a no-no. Then again, so are Kinder chocolate eggs so who the hell knows with your goofy laws.

Well, of course! Those chocolate eggs are dangerous!

Seriously, I do hope you realize that the U.S. is basically a more mature version of the EU. It was formed as a union of sovereign states. It evolved into what it is today by a series of slow steps. So if you want to argue by analogy, you should ask me if I'm OUTRAGED that them thar furrin byoorocrats in Wash-tin are tryin' to tell me I cain't own me a darkie or two (as one could in Maryland until 1862).

The US, like the UK, declared its independence from an empire and, like the UK, it went through a two-year or so negotiation period. During the negotiations, the American Loyalists, like the British Remainers, kept insisting that extricating the country from the empire will be a very difficult and complex affair and that it'd be best just to stay in it rather than trying to leave it.

The British government needs to provide more clarity and less ambiguity on Brexit for negotiations to succeed, French junior economy minister Benjamin Griveaux said during a visit to London on Wednesday.

Asked what impact a “no-deal Brexit” scenario would have on France, Griveaux told reporters that it would be felt by the whole of Europe, but would be even worse for Britain.

“If it goes wrong, it will go wrong for everyone,” he said.

That minister is living in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks the French government can persuade huge financial companies and their workers to leave London and move to Paris.
