Seeing we have been lied to regarding the amount of jobs the pipeline will supply then maybe it is possible that the Republican war hawks think they need the extra crude oil the pipeline will deliver to use for their future wars. Personally I hope the whole pipeline idea gets scuttled. Considering all the negatives that mentalfloss has been posting it just may get scuttled. That would be good. Pickens has set himself up to make a bundle but it is a much better plan both economically and environmentally.

A U.S. payroll tax bill, containing a provision requiring President Barack Obama to make a decision on the controversial Keystone XL pipeline project in 60 days, has passed the American Senate.

While it still requires Obama to sign it into law, the U.S. president indicated he would ink the deal.
“This is spending money that also benefits families and businesses and the entire economy,” said Obama in a news conference midday Saturday. He did not comment on the XL issue.

Earlier in the day, the Senate passed the bill which would renew Social Security payroll tax cuts to 160 million people and extend weekly payments to the unemployed who have been out of work for six months or more.

Several government agencies, including the Department of Defense, Environmental Protection Agency and Labor Department, could have shut down this weekend as their funding was exhausted without the bill.

The most contentious part of that bill is the $7-billion Keystone pipeline, which would run 2,673 kilometres from Alberta to Texas, carrying up to 830,000 barrels of crude per day from northern Alberta to refineries in Oklahoma and the Gulf Coast in Texas.

Let's hope he makes the right decision and puts the environment before the economy.

Without an economy there is no improvemet to environment.

There's no evidence that this pipeline is required to boost the economy anyway.

He should take a firm stance against construction even if it makes for his political exit.

One thing I cannot understand about the US system is how they can do stuff like this. A payroll tax bill somehow includes a provision about a pipeline. These unrelated things should never be allowed to be combined, but that's the way the US system works. Ugly. I know it's all done so they can get the support of this guy and that guy, but it makes for a horrible system of government.

It's just emissions and reflective surfaces. This was never going to be stopped in the first place.

Ditch the subsidies for the Eco Action Plan and prices will plummet. Why the hell should I buy somebody else a furnace or windows? Contractors gouge the Action Plan portion making it too pricy.

Keystone supporters go bananas over Chiquita’s no-oil-sands pledge

Chiquita Brands International, the well-known banana company, is coming under fire from supporters of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline for the company’s decision to curb its reliance on fuels derived from Canadian oil sands crude.

ForestEthics, a nonprofit that works to protect endangered forests in the United States and Canada, said Thursday that Chiquita agreed to stop using fuel derived from oil sands, often called “tar sands” by environmental groups, to ship its bananas.

“Canada’s tar sands is all risk and no benefit for leading American brands like Chiquita that are resolved to reduce environmental problems, so they are working hard to get tar sands out of their transportation footprint,” said Aaron Sanger, director of U.S. campaigns at ForestEthics, in a statement.

ForestEthics has been pressing Chiquita and other companies for months to abandon its reliance on oil sands crude. In a November letter to ForestEthics, Manuel Rodriguez, corporate responsibility officer at Chiquita, said that the company is “committed to directing our transportation providers to avoid, where possible, fuels from tar sands refineries and to adopt a strategy of continuous improvement towards the elimination of those fuels.”

The Alberta Enterprise Group, a Canadian business advocacy organization that is a vocal proponent of the Keystone XL pipeline, called for a boycott of Chiquita bananas over the decision.

“We respect and support any company, Chiquita or otherwise, in their effort to improve their environmental performance,” Alberta Enterprise Group spokesman David MacLean told The Hill. “That is not the issue. What is the issue is unfairly targeting Canadian oil sands.”

Ethical Oil, a non-profit that promotes Canadian oil sands, joined the call for a boycott Friday.

The calls for a boycott come as Republicans included a measure speeding up a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline in a package to extend the payroll tax cut.

Top Democrats and President Obama have said they will reject any package that includes the Keystone measure.

TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline would carry Canadian oil sands crude from Alberta to refineries in Texas. The State Department delayed a final decision on the project – which was supposed to come by the end of the year – until 2013, a move that infuriated proponents of the project, including Republicans in Congress.

While the Keystone project has won the support of Republicans, some moderate Democrats, industry groups and some unions, it faces intense opposition from environmental groups and top Democrats in Congress.

Environmental groups, who are key supporters of Obama, have long raised concerns about the greenhouse gas emissions from oil sands production and they’ve warned of the potential for oil spills from the pipeline.
