GAZA (Reuters) - Hamas on Tuesday condemned U.S. and Israeli interference after a report that officials from the two countries were discussing ways to destabilize a Hamas-led Palestinian government.

The New York Times reported on Monday that officials from the United States and Israel were discussing ways to isolate Hamas if the militant Islamic group, which won an overwhelming victory in the Palestinian election, failed to recognize Israel's right to exist and renounce violence.

"The United States, which claims herself to be the mother of democracy, must respect the election results and the will of the Palestinian people," Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri said, condemning U.S. and Israeli interference.

Hamas defeated Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement in the January 25 election on a pledge to end corruption and continue armed struggle for statehood. It is pledged officially to the destruction of Israel which it says is built on occupied Arab land.

NEW ELECTIONS

The New York Times, in an article on its Web site, said the goal of the campaign would be to ensure that newly-elected Hamas officials failed and new elections were called.

The allies would seek to starve the Palestinian Authority of money and international connections, making life so difficult for Palestinians that they would vote to return a reformed Fatah movement to office, it said.

The Jerusalem-datelined story cited unidentified Israeli officials and U.S. diplomats.

Israeli officials denied they were drafting a plan with the United States to destabilize a Hamas-led government to force new elections.

"The strategy is to present the incoming leadership of the Palestinian Authority a clear choice: either they transform themselves into a legitimate political interlocutor ... or they face international isolation," said foreign ministry spokesman Mark Regev.

The New York Times quoted officials as saying Hamas plans to build up its militias and increase violence and, unless it renounces violence, accepts Israel and accepts previous Palestinian-Israeli agreements, must be starved of power.

"If they make the wrong choice, all the options lead in a bad direction," a senior Western diplomat told the newspaper.

The strategy carries many risks, the officials conceded, saying Hamas would try to secure support from the larger Islamic world, including allies Syria and Iran.

Hamas may resort to an open military confrontation with Israel, it said, effectively beginning a third intifada, or uprising.

Israel, which does not expect Hamas to meet its conditions, will cut off payments of $50 million to $55 million a month in taxes and customs duties and put that money in escrow.

In addition, some of the aid the Palestinians receive from the United States and European Union will be stopped or reduced, the officials told The Times. Further travel restrictions might also be imposed, including cutting Gaza off completely from the West Bank, the newspaper reported.

So democracy, is only good when it benefits America. But that's okay.

They are going back to destabilizing countries that have democratic elections, just like Chile and other places in the 1970s and before. But that is okay.

Feel sorry for the average citizen that will suffer because of this stupid stuff.

So, Hamas refuses to renounce violence.

Hamas still follows a founding constitution that calls for the murder of Jews.

Hamas refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist.

Hamas is elected.

Does that one, simple fact obligate the enemies of Hamas to throw money at them?

Don't be ridiculous.

All this complaining about ignorants, and yet noone has proposed any viable solution. Letting them govern with no external pressure is not an option as one of their platforms is essentially the next Holocaust, so what do we do? Sit by and let the duely elected government attempt to follow through with their plan, or attempt to put pressure on them to push them towards a more peaceful platform?

LOL the bedouin moon story has long been discredited, the moon god is al-ilah not ZIN which just happens to be the old arabic term for "the god" you wonder why a religion would use it eh?

war like race? Arab armies are considered the most poorly trained and organized armies in the world, Only Saudi Arabia and Egypt rank anywhere the rest are negligible.

Mulims arent a race btw its a religion.

deserved to be wiped off the face of the earth

you sure Nostradamus wasnt a spokesperson for Hamas?

how is that option next to the holocaust? Hamas has been in a truce since the original ceasefire, unlike Israel which has consistently broken it to illegally kill off palestinian leaders. Hamas says it will stick to its end of the truce as long as Israel doesnt do anything to provoke it (i.e. kill anymore wheelchair persons)

Hamas ran on a platform of fixing up the government, social responsibility and reducing curruption thats what it will focus on and if they are successful I applaud their efforts. The Palestinian ppl need a breather after all the curruption with the PA.

If the PA wants to come back in with new faces, get their fatah factions of the streets and disarmed then they may stand a chance in another election otherwise the palestinians are bound to vote Hamas back in with an even stronger majority.

Sharon is a leader also, but we all know what he has done, he has always been in favor of war to solve problems, guess what? So have most of the Palestinian "leaders". It's ok to call Sharon a murdering son of a bitch but the poor Palestinian leaders are innocent?
