Trump Supporters Are Fearful That a Twitter Purge Is Coming Monday
The promise of new Twitter rules has the alt-right feeling nervous.
Twitter can be a pretty toxic environment. The app that serves as a newsstand for some and a joke book for others also serves as a virtual re-creation of George Orwell's infamous "Two Minutes Hate" from 1984, and as a result you can, and often will, find yourself on the receiving end of a non-stop barrage of hate from a bunch of strangers. It's a terrible thing to subject yourself to, and yet it's all but a requirement if you plan on using Twitter.
But some of the site's most hateful users are afraid that their ability to harass to their hearts' content might be coming to an end. Yes, the website known for its absolutely terrible handling of harassment of any kind has publicly declared that they're going to try to change that, especially when it comes to threats of violence. And as if it weren't already crystal clear that the alt-right were the bad guys on this one, their reaction to this news that violent threats would no longer be acceptable? Shock and fear. Why? Because they don't know how free speech works.
