The worst thing Trump could do would be to foist a superficial 'unity' on America. That is, to dilute his platform to appease the NeoCons who control the Republican Establishment and are committed to free markets and global economic imperialism above all else.. and are fiercely anti nationalist.

That would create immense tensions within his administration which would reverberate into the country. Such things as softening his stance on trade, AGW, USSC appointments, nationalism, which are at the core of his electoral appeal, would be entirely divisive and would riddle his Presidency with confusion. He has to move forward with a program that perhaps half of the country will disagree with, at least initially, on the sole grounds that it is the right thing to do.

One appointment that embodies this dilemma is the prospect of Mitt Romney filling the position of Secretary of State. That has raised the hackles of his inner most circle. The issue has nothing to do with the bare fisted criticism of Trump's character that Romney levelled on him in the campaign (and vice versa), that comes with the territory.. but in what fomented that.. which is the fundamental irreconcilability of NeoConservatism with the nationalist, populist, dirigiste and moderately progressive political philosophy that Trump espouses.

I hope he chooses the only other candidate of sufficient stature and profile to fill the position, Rudi Giuliani. Mitt Romney would establish a contending power base within his administration, a safe harbour for the NeoCon ideology.

As formidable as Trump may seem, when you to consider what the alternative could have been, one just feels downright relieved!

I'll say! Having a non-racists, non-misogynist tariff hater in the Whitehouse would cause nothing but grief
