As I mentioned on the other thread discussing this topic...I would be inclined to buy it if I saw any evidence that he was joking, but he said it sternly with a straight face, and everyone cheered, not laughed. I think he saw an opportunity to signal his virtue and said it without engaging his brain, and on reflection of how he was being mocked internationally, they had to cover it over somehow.

As a person trying so hard to zealously re-engineer social consciousness and to display their overt feminism so vigorously, it goes against his objective by making jokes about using terms like mankind. Acknowledging how ridiculous political correctness has gotten by mocking it with a joke only belittles his cause.

Although, historically there have been other species of human. Mankind, humankind and homokind could all include species like homo erectus or habilis or neanderthals. Some biologists even suggest that chimpanzees might technically be human. "People" generally goes beyond species and carries a sense of rights. Peoplekind might actually be more true if we don't want to include homo erectus or some such, though since they are extinct it wouldn't matter. Some advocates and even some governments have declared some non-human animals 'people', so unless we want peoplekind to include dolphins we need another word. We could be exclusive to homo sapiens. Sapokind? That's a bit arrogant.
