Brexiteers Badenoch and Braverman need to throw their weight behind a Boris return. He's the only candidate with a democratic mandate. He will be a better PM the second time around - and he will get his second stint

Trusses are for hernias.

What the fuck?
Well, for bulges in your nether regions anyway. 😳

(A truss should be worn all day and be put on before rising in the morning. Trusses are usually removed at night but if a patient has a bad cough, a truss might have to be worn in bed. Elastic band trusses are more comfortable to wear in bed than spring trusses. Trusses should be worn next to the skin)

On 14 October 2022, the British tabloid newspaper Daily Star released a livestream of an iceberg lettuce, comparing the shelf-life of the lettuce to the remaining tenure of British Prime Minister Liz Truss. This was done in response to the ongoing political crisis which occurred just weeks into her tenure, leading to many commentators to believe that her resignation would be imminent. Truss eventually resigned on 20 October 2022, before the lettuce had wilted.

"Yes, Minister" (1984 Christmas special)

Sounds like what's going on in the Tory Party in 2022.

Johnson lands back in the UK

Nomia Iqbal
Reporting from Gatwick

Boris Johnson has landed at Gatwick airport after a 10-hour flight from the Dominican Republic, where he was staying in a luxury resort with his wife and children.

We understand he was there for a few weeks - so he was either due to come back anyway or cut his trip short following Liz Truss's resignation.

Johnson was seated in economy with heavy security, including members of the Metropolitan Police.

He has not officially or directly spoken yet about whether he plans to run for party leadership.

Almost half of Tory MPs go public with their support

Almost half of all Tory MPs - 169 out of 357 - have gone public with their support for who they want to succeed Liz Truss as the next prime minister.

The BBC now estimates that Rishi Sunak has reached 100 public backers needed to qualify as a candidate in the leadership race.

The current tally is:
  • Rishi Sunak - 102 MPs
  • Boris Johnson - 46 MPs
  • Penny Mordaunt - 21 MPs
We're only including MPs who have told the BBC on the record who they are backing, or MPs who have publicly declared their support.

Penny Mordaunt releases her campaign video "The Real Me"...

In 2014, Mordaunt appeared on reality television programme Splash! Although her Labour opponents criticised the media appearance, questioning whether her focus should instead have been on her constituency work, Mordaunt stated that the response was overwhelmingly positive and defended her appearance, stating that she was donating all of her £10,000 appearance fee plus any additional sponsorship to charity; £7,000 towards the renovation of her local lido and the rest to four armed services charities.

What's been happening today?

The race to become the UK's next prime minister continues, after Liz Truss announced her resignation on Thursday.

As things stand, we're in a watching-and-waiting phase, but there's plenty going on behind the scenes as contenders jockey for position.

If you're just joining our live coverage, or in need of a catch-up, here's a rundown:

  • There are currently two frontrunners in the race, Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak, but neither the former PM nor the former chancellor have officially confirmed they are running
  • That's not stopping Johnson's allies from claiming the former PM already has the support of 100 Tory MPs, the threshold required to make the shortlist
  • And it's also not stopping Sunak supporters from casting doubt on those claims, demanding Johnson's camp publish a list of MPs backing him
  • Penny Mordaunt remains the only official candidate to declare a run. She pledges to: "Unite the party. Deliver the manifesto. Win the General Election."
  • Both Sunak and Johnson remain well ahead of Mordaunt in terms of declared supporters (Sunak has 122, Johnson has 53, and Mordaunt has 23 - but this is changing at a rapid pace)
  • Hopeful candidates have until Monday at 14:00 BST to find 100 backers. The general public don't have a say but Conservative Party members will unless MPs unite around just one candidate.

Johnson (again) or Sunak? Either way, the Tories are finished.

If Johnson gets in again, he could be out again by Christmas
