Tornado watch in effect for part of southern Ontario

Part of southern Ontario is under a tornado watch as a thunderstorm system passes over the Golden Horseshoe.

Environment Canada issued a tornado watch Wednesday, saying that conditions were favourable for the development of the funnel clouds.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected in most of the areas listed under the watch, but the weather agency warned that isolated tornadoes would be possible.

Officials warned those in the affected areas to be prepared to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

In the event of a tornado, residents are advised to go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents and trailers, a statement from Environment Canada said.

"As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris."

The Burk's Falls-South River, Algonquin Park and Huntsville areas are under a tornado warning, which is an upgrade from a watch. Those in the areas are warned to stay inside until the warning has lifted.

thanks Boomer, I'm in there, it began about 12:30...right now it's completely sunny but wow with the wind gusts...everything becomes very still and then, the trees are slamming back and forth...my only precaution was to get the cat's carrier from the basement in case we have to go down there, then we are good to go... I'm on the eighth floor and the trees are likely ten feet higher than me and they are rocking and rolling and the temp just keep rising and rising...it feels pretty weird actually

but just looking out the window and they are all open, it's just another summer day

Nice and sunny out now....but windy.
According to the aftermath of Pine Lake I believe that is how it starts. Boxcars flying by your window is also on the list of signs that you are in one.

In a big building do you go up or down the stairs or just say in the stairwell as building that tall don't fall over. Open the windoes as the difference in pressure alone will blow the out.

yeah thanks MHz, I would slam the cat into her carrier and head right down the stairs to the basement

I did think about the windows actually and decided I'd likely just leave them open and take off

hm. guess the open window thing is a myth

but I wouldn't be stopping to worry about it, I'd just go

I was only going for the window breaking and flying glass being an added danger. The inside will be destroyed in either case

well hopefully it will just pass right on through like it always does....either way, what will be, will be...I just had to make sure I had transport for the cat...I have a couple of bathrooms with no windows too and our basement has no windows so it's all good,

In the bush near Sudbury
Dizel seems to think the bath tub's the safest place to be in a thunder storm - and tries digging the drain bigger if it's really close. Might be a safe place from large debris - but there's no paw grips if a tornado takes the tub to Oz.

They activated the EBS for it. Interrupted a perfectly good Trooper song. I wonder how the EBS knows when music is on and not commercials?
