RE: Too American to be Ca

Well, I figured I'd hop on the train in hopes of getting this topic back on tracks, it seems as though it's been derailed.

At any rate, Hank, Sorry you were treated so badly in Ontario, I personally live in a border town and as such I personally have seen both the good and the bad sides of the local Americans. (Please forgive me in advance if I use the derogitory term "Yank" as I am so accustomed to it.) Most Americans I have met seem to be OK, except they are insanely patriotic, almost neurotic. They like to shove thier patriotism down your throat in the most verbose way they are known for.

Again not all Americans are jerks, but unfortunately 85% of the ones I have met are nothing more than ignorant arrogant asses. While I don't condone the violence you were subjected to Hank, I also don't like the idea of having guns pulled on me on multiple occasions while visiting friends in the states. So let's see the difference here, shall we? Eggs vs. Bullets? Again I am trying my best to not be too cynical but unfortunately it is extremely difficult. Perhaps if the American people would start learning a little modesty then perhaps they would not be looked down upon in the manner they often are.

So, what does this mean? Tomorrow is Sunday, and Canadians will still be Canadians and Yanks, err Americans will still have George Bush =) (sorry I had to include at least one dig on Dubya!) We as a rule, don't support the War on Oil, err Iraq, and I don't know 1 Canadian personally who does. So if that means that we don't apperciate the Americans, then so beit, I know I'll still sleep as well tonight as I did before.
And Hank, Comments like:
You don't have to like Bush, but show some respect for the country who you have fed off of for years.
Will get you nothing more than another egging big guy

In Relation to the United States...

I respect the United States. I respect the people of the United States. And you know what? Just because he managed to get up there, and because he endeavours to represent a nation both in terms of domestic issues and abroad, I respect the President of the United States.

I appreciate the friendship between our two nations, and I respect the relationship that we have had so far — however, this does not mean that I don't reserve the right to disagree with the Administration of the United States, from time to time. The freedom of opinion, and furthermore of the expression thereof, is my democratic right (at least in Canada), and if I see that it may be appropriate, then I may exercise that right in whatever manner I may deem, at my own discretion, to be appropriate.

Respect and agreement do not go hand-in-hand; they are exclusive of one another. I respect the people of the United States because they are a people, period; I respect the President of the United States because he represents a nation, and because he, too, is a person. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree — however, my respect is irrespective (an odd pair of words) of whatever squabbles may surface in Canada—U.S. relations.

My entire family has had some form of post-secondary education in the States, and i am currently going to school in the US, and i find the people almost no different then here. You have your a**holes here, you have them there. You have ignorant Americans, and you have ignorant Canadians. I think our cultures are so intermingled that it is hard for us to be same.

As for this Anti-American sentiment, it seems to be a passing trend. I believe it has gone a bit over board though. I mean, chanting "US Sucks" at a junior hockey tournament??? I was ashamed to be from the Vancouver area when i heard about that. These boys arent Republican Party Spokesmen, theyre 17-19 year old freakin hockey players!!!! For all we know, many of them probably dont like Bush either!!

Anyways, being from White Rock, at least i have my IHOP to comfort me :D

RE: Too American to be Ca

I am with yaballa and Hank.

Seriously, does it make you feel better about yourself to show the same arrogance that you percieve "they" have?

Any of the numerous times that I have been to the States (and i've travelled all over), i have met ALL nice people who want to know about Canada, who go out of their way to assist you, who are friendly and not that different than us. The difference i guess from what I observed is that they don't sit there and talk down their northern neighbours to feel better about themselves.

The lone exception for me was bad service of New York ...but New York can hardly be the standard by which we should judge Americans....they are like a country onto themselves.

I just think that if our country takes pride in themselves by booing the National Anthem..than go hard i guess.
