If OAS is a seniors income assistance program, why are seniors different than other people on other income assistant programs?

Because, seniors (generally) don't have the remaining years or ability to make money in other ways, and therefore our society decided that they should be protected.

And this means that EVERY senior should receive money that they don't really need to live? Many people under the age of 65 die every year so perhaps we should also be given money just in case we don't live the next 10, 20 or 30 years.

I'm still sure there are better things to do than have gov't blow hundreds of thousands on eliminating a program in order to set up a different program that basically does the same thing.
I can agree with Dexter's comment about lowering the cap on OAS according to income, though.

We already have many social assistance programs including GIS which would be able to handle the distribution of OAS funds to those seniors that need the money.

"Because it's different than other social assistance programs. (How is that an arguement?)"

How exactly is stating that the GIS program currently exists to ensure that seniors live above the poverty line "putting my foot in my mouth"?

Well, you didn't like it when I answered the question you asked instead of another one, then you got mad when I pointed out that you were asking two different questions without knowing what the difference was in your own writing, so I guess it's fair for someone to point out that you can't seem to read, or write, or spell.

Does anyone know a senior that makes more than 50k income a year? It's far from the norm. More like very rare.

I expect there are lots of them, but I certainly know plenty who don't make half that.

I do too, but I also know a lot of seniors, who I have no idea what their income is. I don't ask people how much they have in their R.R.S.P.s ! Some have a bit of inherited money too.

Time to kill OAS? I'll get right on it.. oh that's KAOS.

------------------------------------------

Seriously, this is the only way to save Social Security in my opinion, raising the age limit.. people are living longer and drawing on the social security, longer.. actually as the average lifespan increased so should have the age at which you can start getting social security. Otherwise we will be bankrupt..

I was watching the Transcendent Man which talked about the singularity when computers think for themselves and man becomes almost a cyborg in some ways, and possibly living for ever.. think of that scenario...

I agree 100% as seniors are now approaching 20% of the population, where it used to be 4 or 5%, not to mention that seniors on average are in better health today.
But that is a far cry from bloody minded ideas of cutting them off the OAP.

How does a starving senior warrant a different program than a starving single parent with three children or a person who has health issues which prevents them from working?

You are talking about apples and oranges here, tibear. Social Assistance programs are run by the provinces. OAS is a federal program. The provinces will never cede control of their SA programs to the Feds - never.

There is one other huge difference too, one is permanent for the life of the pensioner, the other is a temporary stop gap measure to give relief to people down on their luck and resources.
