Hu: Tibet problem entirely internal issue of China

Updated: 2008-04-12 13:48

SANYA, Hainan -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that the Tibet problem is entirely an internal issue of China, and national unification features the conflict between the central government and the Dalai group.

Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) shakes hands with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd who attends the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province, April 12, 2008. [Xinhua]
"Our conflict with the Dalai clique is not an ethnic problem, not a religious problem, nor a human rights problem. It is a problem either to safeguard national unification or to split the motherland," Hu said.
He made the remarks while meeting with visiting Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Sanya, a scenic city in south China'sHainan Province.
Talking about the violent crimes in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, and some other places, Hu stressed that all these incidents were not "peaceful demonstrations" or "non-violent" actions proclaimed by some people, but sheer violent crimes.
"No responsible government will sit idle for such crimes, which gravely encroach human rights, gravely disrupt social order and gravely jeopardize the life and property security of the masses," said the president.
Hu stressed that the door for dialogue between the central government and the Dalai Lama is open. "The barrier to contacts and talks does not lie on our side, but on the side of the Dalai Lama. If the Dalai Lama has the sincerity, he should put it into action."
"As long as the Dalai side stops activities splitting the motherland, stops activities scheming and instigating violence, and stops activities sabotaging the Beijing Olympic Games, we are ready to continue contacts and talks with him at any time," Hu said.
Rudd stressed that Australia fully recognizes China's sovereignty over Tibet and Taiwan. The one-China policy adopted by Australia remains unchanged.
He added Australia hopes to become a sincere friend of China. The development of long-term, friendly and cooperative ties with China is a long-term strategy of Australia.
Rudd also wished the Beijing Olympic Games a success.
Rudd came to visit China at the invitation of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. Wen held talks with him, and top legislator Wu Bangguomet with him in Beijing.
The Australian prime minister will attend the opening ceremony of the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia on Saturday afternoon in Boao of Hainan Province.

Well that idea that It's entirely "China's issue/problem/situation vis a vis Tibet...won't convince the Untied States or many others... The U.S. has made its position clear, that any nations "business" whether that's Iraq or Iran, Nicaragua, Haiti, East Timor, Chile, Venezuela, Columbia etc. etc. falls under the purview of "American Interests". Particularly when the "Buck stops here.."...which of course is the American national anthem....

Let's see.....China invades Tibet, spends 50 years solidifying the annexation of the area, often with extreme violence, and it is an "internal" affair.

The USA invades Iraq, and stays to try and stabilize the situation......does that mean everything that happens in Iraq is an "internal affair", and none of anybody's business?

No, of course not.

The USA, the oldest democracy on earth, our friend and ally, is of course, "the Great Satan".

Bit of a double standard, wouldn't you say?

What double standard are you speaking about? Iraq is a mess, Haiti was left in shambles, the mess that America has left lies sprinkled reasonably equally around the world! You're one of these people that "believe" that all the "good-people" all the "right-thinking people" in the world are concentrated in the United States of America so whatever the U.S. decides is "their" interest....is perfectly OK with you...right?

It turns out you're an imperialist Colpy, not someone at all interested in "freedom" or self-directed effort and entitled to think for yourself, but someone who'd put all their eggs into the basket of.. "what's Good for America is good for the World"

Please desist with this notion you come up with from time to time you call "democracy" and simply accept the fact that you're banner is right up there with the modern econo-imperialism of the United States of America.

Lone..

Colpy's the last person to ever let reality impinge on the rose-colored world of adamant Americanism that he's happy to embrace.

Perhaps people don't believe the axiom that "the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior...."

Let's review the record here...

A tyranical oppressive regime levying the burden of an imperial tax on a few thugs with means to get to North America... leave and establish the Untied Staes of America.

After the "tea party" is over....these same people purchase blacks from Africa to fatten up the "bottom line" on plantations and throughout the labor force....

Great premise for investing trust in a people...don't ya think!

Getting back on track here.... An internal issue? China sends in the army to assert soverignity (read: force communist rule) on an indigenous people. Fifty years later, when the world's attention is focused on China so they can't do the murder and meyhem thing (as if the Rape of Nanking was a purely Japanese phenomenon) those indigenous people assert traditional rights in view of the whole world. United Nations may accept it as an internal issue. How much faith did China place in UN during Korea, or Vietnam, or Cambodia?

Woof!

What happened to Switzerland or even Greece? The USA ceased being a Democracy when Jeb gave brother George the presidency and George killed the Constitution in favour of the Patriot Act.

I thought you studied history....

Woof!

First of all, the Swiss didn't get a federal constitution until 1848, it was much modified in 1874.....the USA has been a democracy since the late 18th century..............BTW, women in Switzerland got the vote in 1972.....it always was before that that you had to have done military service and qualified with personal weapons to vote.......

Greece was "democratic" a couple of centuries BC.....but I meant continuously, more or less.

You DO have a point though.....the oldest democracy on earth is Iceland, I misspoke......

The Patriot Act is a travesty, as are other unconstitutional acts of the current US gov't. Unfortunately, they were adopted by an ELECTED President, and an ELECTED Congress........democratically. All accepted by the masses and tested in subsequent elections. As was our ridiculous anti-terror legislation.

Still, it is a democracy, here and there.

The election was handed to Bush fully Constitutionally by the US Supreme Court.....even Al Gore acknowledges that.

Yes, I do study history.......

Oh Mikey, back off a foot or two.

This is BS. I have often criticized actions of the United States on these forums.

It is just that I am not blinded by their closeness..........the truth is we are MUCH better off with the USA as the world's only super-power than with any of the other contenders......such as China. Or Russia.

MUCH MUCH MUCH better off.

You have to deal with reality here.

It's not a democracy Colpy! It's a republic! TThis "democracy" you speak of participated in disenfranchising women, kidnapping and enslaving Africans, embraces the credo that it is the Manifest Destiny of "America" to rule the world....!

Sounds like an empire to me!

Ah....Mikey, perhaps you hadn't noticed........slavery was abolished in the USA in 1865.

It still goes on in China, the country you are comparing favourably with our neighbours and ally........

Oh yeah.....and an African-American is one of the contenders for President.......or did you miss that?

No sorry but I won't "back off".... A great deal of the mess the world is in TODAY has to do with the "pass" given by the world to America for its decades of interference and practices of "regime-change" and econo-imperialism.

While the United States languished in safety and studiously consumed all its natural resources, the rest of the world was embroiled in conflict and turmoil. When the Nazis were looking for investors they went to the Untied States...and found them!

You've got this idea that becasue you live in peace and you enjoy the consumption granted you by the American ethos of consumption without consequence... that the rest of the world doesn't exist! That somehow the fish you eat, the steel that's smelted into the guns you buy, the air you breathe the water you drink and the "life-style" you enjoy is somehow remote to and insulated against the dynamics that the rest of the world has been dealing with for generations!

When you put sugar in your coffee in the morning do you really think about the Nescafe or Nestle's field workers making a dollar a day? Do you think about the destruction of Haiti so cane farmers feeding Redpath Sugar could operate a more "profitable" corporation? Do you consider that the gas you use in your car came from a nation where the oppression of human rights is perfectly acceptable so long as you've got gas for your SUV?

Sorry Colpy, but the responsibility for a great deal of what's wrong in this world is absolutely product of the same mentality that accepted slavery when it came to the "bottom line"...the same mentality that engages in petroleum wars to maintain a status quo that sees brainwashed consumers being evicted from their homes because the "money" is in slave-wages paid to off-shore labor pools...where millions of Americans can't afford decent health care and the quality of education has been declining for decades...

The list is nearly unending...And the great fraud is that people like you are convinced that this "model" this "example of "progress" is something that's "exportable"...that the consumerism of the west is without limits and finding any reason...to invade and occupy, to embargo and run CAP over no-fly-zones is the dynamic of progress and peace!

That we find solutions to the monumental difficulties we face by weaponizing Europe to give us a "missile defense shield"....

C'mon man use your head!

This is bull****, Mikey.

I'm sorry that whatever neurosis you suffer from leaves you completely blinkered when it comes to our neighbours to the south, all you can see is evil.

The truth is that America is traditionally isolationist............no attempt to rule the world. Had they that urge, they would have taken the opportunity offered between 1945 and 1948, when they had nukes, and nobody else did......with millions of troops in Europe.....how easy to knock the USSR out of the game?

Mikey, this is idiotic.

Europe is WEAPONIZED to the gills with nukes.....a little stupid to complain about defensive weapons, isn't it?

The Nazis found investors EVERYWHERE, not just in the USA......you forget that by 1938 there were only FIVE real democracies left on earth......the United States, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Australia...........those were free-market economies........they ALL dealt with Nazi Germany.

Who rebuilt Europe and Japan after WWII....INCLUDING the nations that were their enemies? They even offered help to the USSR.....it was rejected.

Who wrote the constitution of Japan? AND, instead of treating that nation as a vassal state, set up a liberal form of gov't, stabilized the place, then left? That's right WALKED AWAY!

Yep......if they are trying to rule the world, they are doing a poor job of it.....

Now, make up youtr ****ing mind, I'm tired of cutting you slack......do you want the USA to be non-interventionist, or NOT? As it is, you just **** on them no matter WHAT they do. If they buy their oil without reference to human rights in the seller's nation......they are wrong. If they invade a monster fascist nation and try to reform it, they are wrong, if they come to the defense of an Islamic ally, they are wrong.

Pull your head out of your ass Mikey....you are inconsistent, all over the place intellectually (if that term applies), and I really suspect there is something wrong with your head.....you can't deal with our neighbours, our allies, our friends........where on earth do the people have more liberty than the USA?

What will destroy the world is morons that spend so much time in self-loathing, so obsessively contemplating every flaw of the west that they fail to recognize the disaster that the decline of western power and phiolosophy will cause the world........

If the West loses it's prominence, the world will be plunged into a new Dark Ages.......

Thanks for helping that along.......

I'm sorry Colpy I appologize.

Slavery was abolished in the United States and the machinations of corporations around the world that have left so many messes and legitimized sweatshops and destroyed cultures is perfectly OK!

God Bless America!

I guess it takes some people a very long time to put puzzles together and the picture remains incomplete until that last piece is found.

Congratulate yourself ...rest secure in knowing that "slavery" was "abolished but don't even think about commercial interests that entice the poorest to work for next to nothing as the spirit of slavery simply removed a little... at least far enough from your comprehension to satisfy your sense of entitlement.

It's informative to watch you shout mental illness against those who don't share your worldview. I'l bet you get a kick out of watching the retards too...

From the neurotics notebook…

“Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth, more than ruin, more even than death. Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.” ~Bertrand Russell

Unless of course the “thinker” is a hopeless neurotic…

Mikey, it is not crazy, or obsessive, or neurotic to disagree with me.....

It is OCD at least to take every subject, no matter how removed, and turn it into an attack on the USA.

This was a thread about CHINA oppressing TIBETANS, the USA has nothing to do with it....

Were your reach on this an isolated incident.....I'd say "so what".....but EVERY thread is to you, an opening to attack the USA, or the USA and Israel.

It is a little strange..........
