Greetings. Next week I will be moving my girlfriend from Thunder Bay to Toronto. We will be driving a loaded Uhaul cube van and pulling her Honda CRV hitched onto the back of the van.

Normally I would take the transCanada highway all the way however we are a little concerned about the steep hills we would have to go up and down along the side of Lake Superior. I've heard some horror stories about the brakes on the uHaul vans and don't want to risk driving down a steep grade and our brakes not being able to handle our load.

So we are considering taking Hwy 11 instead (through Kapuskasing).

Has anyone ever taken this route between Toronto and Thunder Bay? Its difficult to tell how much longer it would take.
Thanks.:)

Yes I have travelled both routes many times. Either way is safe. But the northern route is flater, straighter and longer, but not as long as it looks on the a map because its further north, but more isolated.

The southern router is hillier, more turns, towns and about an hour shorter. Its also more scenic.

If you take the northern route make sure you have enough fuel to get from Longlac to Hearst. Many gas stations close at night. good luck!

Please be careful to make sure that the truck and trailer gear are adequate to your burden.
