Three Christians will be put to death for crimes

PALU, Indonesia - Indonesian officials said Wednesday they had deployed thousands of police on Sulawesi island ahead of this week's planned executions of three Christian men found guilty of leading deadly attacks on Muslims six years ago.

Amid complaints that the men did not receive a fair trial, a top Christian leader urged his community not to resort to violence and to pray that the president would grant them a last-minute reprieve.

Government officials, lawyers and priests said the convicts would face a firing squad on Thursday or early Friday.

The case is heightening tensions in the world's most populous Muslim nation and raising questions about the role of religion in deciding punishment for sectarian violence that swept Sulawesi province from 1998 to 2002, killing more than 1,000 people from both communities.

Thousands of Muslims have taken to the streets in recent weeks demanding the three men be put to death, while Christians have rallied for their lives to be spared.

The furor comes amid a Muslim outcry in many nations set off by Pope Benedict XVI's comments on Islam. He had cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as "evil and inhuman." The pontiff said Wednesday he did not mean to malign Islam.

Fabianus Tibo, 60, Marinus Riwu, 48, and Dominggus da Silva, 42, were found guilty of leading a Christian militia t that launched a series of attacks on Muslims in May 2000 — including an assault on an Islamic school that killed at least 70 people.

The attorney general's office said this week the three men could be put to death Thursday, but a priest said after a jailhouse meeting with Tibo that the killings would likely occur the following day.

"The execution is going to take place early Friday," priest Jimmy Tumbelaka said.

Christian groups note that only a handful of people were punished for the violence that wracked Sulewesi, most receiving prison terms of less than 15 years. The bloodshed largely ended with the signing of a peace deal four years ago.

Tibo, Riwu and da Silva were the only people sentenced to death, and human rights activists say it appears unlikely they were the masterminds. Their trial, Christian groups allege, was a sham.

"Everyone is angry, including me," said Rinaldy Damanik, the head of the Central Sulawesi assembly of churches. Regardless, he is calling on his followers to refrain from doing anything that would spark renewed fighting.

There have been isolated acts of religious violence in recent years, most carried out by Islamic militants, from bombings to the beheadings of three school girls.

"My worry is there will be another bombing or shootings" timed to the executions, Damanik said. "If that happens, then I fear the masses will be uncontrollable."

The police chief in Poso, the scene of the worst fighting in early 2000, said the city was calm.

"But we are prepared to handle any reaction against the executions by deploying about 2,000 police, including a mobile brigade, a bomb squad and an anti-terror unit," said Lt. Col. Rudy Sufahriyadi.

In a statement Wednesday, Italy's Foreign Ministry said its Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema met with his Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirajuda on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, and urged him not to execute the three Christians.

"D'Alema made a strong appeal" not to go ahead with their execution "for humanitarian reasons," the statement said.

Capital punishment is illegal throughout the European Union, and Benedict last month made an appeal for clemency.

Now if they commit the crimes that killed 70+ especially Muslims school children they should be executed. However, if any Muslims commited crimes as just as heinous they deserved death as well.

I think violence will occur.

If they committed those crimes and killed little Muslim children then I wouldn't really care. They deserve to die for their crimes if they committed them. However, the lack of justice for Christian victims of the violence is a real shame.

Of course voilence will occur. The Christians have no business stirring up trouble and committing acts of violence anymore than Muslims should be engaged in crimes against humanity. I think its time all religion was examined, as it seems to be the source of so much violence and murder.
Several centuries ago the Christians went over to the Middle East and murdered people in the most violent ways simply because those people were Muslims. Now the shoe is on the other foot and the Western World is on the receiving end. Actually all this hatred and violence can be laid at the feet of George Bush and his neo conservative agenda.
I agree with Bush nailing Afghanistan they clearly were behing the attack on America. The war with Iraq, in my view was a violation of international law, and the only stable leader in the region was removed in favor of death, destruction, and civil war. Kind of a bad trade off for getting rid of Saddam.
These so called Christians are victims of their own actions, if they had not engaged in terrorist actions they would not face the death penalty for their crimes.

What difference does religion make in this case? Its superfluous.

These men led a military organization which purposely killed 70 innocent civilians. Any entity which purposely targets civilians should be held accountable for its actions.

I disagree with the death penalty, but I'm not about to tell Indonesians or Texas how to run their affairs.

May I?... I lived in Indonesia (business purposes) 3 years, twelve years ago. Back then, I felt racism towards me because I was white and not just because I was Christian, and I am not American either. It didn't feel very good, especially when threats were involved, with time it got worse, so we had to leave, we didn't feel it was safe for us being there with kids. Why is everything blamed on the U.S these days. Is problem in Russia with Chechnya - also U.S. fault, or problem in France, which started at least 20 years ago, when the arabs were placing bombs in the rubbish bins in Paris, is it also U.S. fault? What's wrong with everyone these days, why can't they look at the problem straight forward, without trying to find the exuse?
The problem comes from them, not from us. And I believe in strong punishment for what they do, just like any criminal would get for killing, threatening, abusing the law, etc.

Did anyone hear of the name Khomeini well if you didn't, apparently, he stirred the fanatism in muslims, people were praised with money if they would follow the old tradtions, like marrying four wives, wearing burques, and, yes, intolerrance for Christians and Jews and non believers.

Life under Khomeini
Under Khomeini's rule, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharia(Islamic law) was introduced, with the Islamic dress code enforced for both men and women. Women were forced to cover their hair and body, while men were not allowed to wear short-sleeve shirts or shorts. Many opponents fled the country because of their dislike of the political situation after the Revolution and its changes...

But, no, it has to be U.S. doesn't it :?

P.S. Nowdays, they even do female circumsision in some muslim countries, apparently, very painfull and distguisting procedure, which is done on little girls without anaesthetics
