2014 was an historic and tumultuous year with larger-than-life stories at home and abroad. When news breaks, and it broke quite a bit this year, Twitter and other social media is increasingly the place we check first. It’s where we debate, hash out, and explore every angle.

Twitter is also an invaluable source of data about the national conversation. And being data people, we decided to dig into more than 184 million Twitter mentions across 80 different news events this year to look back on what actually mattered, and to who. Our findings are displayed in this infographic:

That's an excellent way to validate ISIS, if they are really, really bad they should at least be a full month behind on their internet bill. Bet they pay by the year, . . . in advance to get the 10% off.

Seriously the colors are fuking up my video card, the graph is not staying still like it is supposed.

lol, thankfully it is just you, I don't even want to know why you thought having this as part of your skill set was a 'must have' thing as it would probably not fit into one post. (other than fuking me up and that should never be anybodies sole goal)

But only the U.S. and Canada matter

Canada does not matter in world affairs. It has less influence on the world stage than Finland. It's a country which barely registers on the minds of the rest of the world. Most people outside Canada think your capital city is Toronto.

Totally agree, we should keep our traps shut more often than not. We should have a referendum on having a referendum on anything dealing with our constitution as well as anything to do with foreign policy. Do we still get the 10 free drinks before voting time?

...in your opinion.

Well, it's a fact.

Canada does not matter to 99.99% of the world's population. The country rarely even registers on the minds of 7 billion people. You're completely overshadowed by your much bigger neighbour. You're a member of Nato but your membership is merely political rather than military because your military is too small. If you were an EU state, you would be merely its seventh-largest, being smaller than Poland. You would have around 50 MEPs in the EU parliament, compared to Poland's 51, Britain's 73 and Germany's 89. Basically, you would be outvoted by Poland.

In your opinion.

No. It's a fact. There's a difference between a fact and an opinion.

For example, everything I've said on this thread is fact, whereas everything you have said is opinion.

The Brittish soldiers that come to BATUS say otherwise.

Do they really? All of them? Have you spoken to most or all of them over the last 70-odd years?

I'm assuming many people in Toronto think Toronto is the capital.
