Because of where I live, I use satellite for my Internet. I believe this is an option for people living in cities as well. My provider tells me the proposed hike will not affect my rate. Regardless, I think that any excuse to increase rates without cause will happen, but for now, I have to trust my provider.

The wires attached to hydro poles not only provide electricity, but they deliver phone, internet and cable services.

And the cost of attaching those wires to the poles is on the way up.

The Ontario Energy Board wants to increase those fees after requests from hydro companies like Hydro One.

Fifteen internet and cable providers across the province have formed the Ontario Broadband Coalition to fight the increase.

If the hydro pole rate hike goes through these companies will be forced to pass the cost on to their customers, according to coalition spokesperson Jay Thomson.

Thomson explains the actual pole rate is different for every hydro company and provider, but on average is $22.35 per pole per year.

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) regulates these rates. Thomson says the OEB wants to create a flat rate across the province of $53, which would be a 133 per cent increase to the providers who pay the fee.

Yes. The corrupt Liberals should be swinging from lamp posts. I spent a couple of hours with our local Oakville MPP working a charity event, about five years back. He was one of the asses that they spent a billion bucks saving. Nice enough fellow (was a turncoat who used to run for the NDP) but certainly not worth ten to the ninth power dollars.

I also live deep in the bush, CC and have Xplornet as my internet service provider. The dish is attached to my house not the power lines overhead.

Works great for me, justlooking. I have the basic package and it is all I want or need. When a power outage messed up my connection last year, they fixed the problem in no time at all and they cut my monthly bill by $10 for an entire year. $100/month for advertised speeds of 25 MB and 500 GB per month limit. I use a rival company for the same price and generally use less than 30% of my limit. There is also a cheaper plan with lower speeds and lower download limit.
