I think, to put it in terms that Flossy can understand, it was a stunning reversal by the Dippers

Poor Alberta if only the people did not complain about the former PC leader's plane rides which was pennies per person now they will be paying a lot more with the NDP government

The East may try to get our money and oil and whatever else, one thing they will desperately need in the not too distant future is out Chinooks and I don't see them being able to touch that come hell or high water.

Poor Liberalman, he has no idea what he's talking about.
No kidding, but then this last post isn't the post that made that abundantly clear.

I guess that is one way to keep some oilmen employed, seems like overkill if they are the ones that caused the leak.
And I still think we should nationalize all Canadian resources. But I'm a dirty hippie.
Too late the US beat us to doing that.

What a stunning surprise - a government that actually investigates a problem and responds appropriately for a change. This is going to be hard for Albertans to get used to.

Why? Are you suggesting that Albertans are any different than any other Canadian?

Alberta's economic diversification plan wins praise from industry

Alberta's economic diversification plan wins praise from industry

Alberta's new economic diversification plan could provide much-needed apprenticeship opportunities for the province's tradespeople, according to one organization that represents 75,000 construction, maintenance and fabrication workers.

Walter Fraleigh, executive director of the Building Trades of Alberta, believes the government will jumpstart employment and training opportunities for construction workers with its $500-million royalty credit program for new petrochemical plants.

"This announcement by the government today, it's good timing. It's the right announcement at the right time for us," he said.

The government said the program has the potential to see two or three new facilities built in Alberta, with shovels in the ground as early as the end of this year.

"It's probably one of my most difficult challenges that I think we see in regards to our industry, is how we're going to keep the current cohort of apprentices that we've been cultivating over the last couple years and ensure that they've got jobs so that they can finish their apprenticeships and be the skilled trades people that we need going forward," he said.

"We had a big gap in the '80s when we lost our economy back then, and we certainly wouldn't want to see a repeat of that," he said.

"This cyclical, volatile price of oil has always given us grief, no matter what," he said.

What is really sad about this idea is that it could have been instituted by any of the various PC governments over the last few decades - instead they worked at selling off Alberta's resources in raw form.

Trust the CBC to put a positive spin on deficit spending and corporate bailouts. So when the dippers give money to industry it is no longer a subsidy but an economic plan.

Flossy your deceit is astounding...

It never ceases to be funny, why people like yourself, so smug so sure, have to resort to the dishonesty you do.

At any rate, it's nice to see Notley finally throwing a haphazard plan together.

I guess you were lying about her having a plan months ago.

Re: Alberta's economic diversification plan wins praise from industry

Albertans have been wanting more refineries for years. Let's hope this is enough of a carrot to get them to build them.......

"Instead of shipping our raw resources and the jobs that go with it out of province to places like Texas and Louisiana, we are adding value to them here at home and creating a wide array of value-added products," Bilous said. "Everything from detergents, fertilizer, anti-freeze, textiles, and plastics for consumer goods, plastics used to make your cellphone, the dashboard for your car, and toys.

"Most importantly, this program will help create thousands of new, high-paying jobs for Alberta workers."

Edmonton city councillor Ed Gibbons, who is also vice-chair for Alberta's industrial heartland association, said foreign companies are interested, and the government's incentive program will encourage investment.

He said at least one plant is already being built in Redwater, and there's room for more.

Alberta has vast supplies of methane and propane. But it costs 30 to 40 per cent more to build processing plants in the province than it does on the U.S. Gulf Coast, where $100-billion in current projects are either proposed or under construction.

"I think this puts us on the radar screen, it puts us into the mix," said David Podruzny, vice-president of business and economics for the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada. He said the timing of the announcement couldn't be better.

"This is a welcome initiative to try and diversify the Alberta economy, because it's going to enhance an opportunity for more investment in the sector," said Podruzny.

"The program is going to improve the attractiveness of Alberta in attracting some of the world-scale investment projects that are already going to come somewhere in North America, and now it puts Alberta in the running for some of these investments."
