England are on top on this First Day of the Third Test of the 2015 Ashes at Edgbaston in Birmingham. What a topsy-turvy series it has been so far, with England the better team in the first match, Australia in the second, and the series level at 1-1.

Australia won the toss and decided to bat first, obviously fancying their chances on that pitch. However, the English bowlers have been ruthless, especially the once-again brilliant James Anderson, who showed again that he is one of the world's best bowlers by taking 6-47.

Eventually, the Baggy Greens were all out for just 136 after a mere 36.4 overs.

England have thrashed Australia by eight wickets after just three days in the Third Test of the Ashes to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

England need to win just one of the remaining two Tests to win the Ashes. Australia, who have not won an Ashes Series in England and Wales since 2001 will, as the current holders, keep hold of the Ashes should the Series finish a draw.

England win by 8 wickets
England lead the five-match Ashes Series 2-1

England head coach Trevor Bayliss has challenged his side to perform consistently after they took a 2-1 lead over Australia in the Ashes.

England sealed an impressive eight-wicket win over the tourists inside three days at Edgbaston on Friday.

It extended a run of alternating between wins and defeats to seven games - the longest such sequence in Tests.

"We are playing very well at the moment but the challenge is to play like that two games in a row," said Australian Bayliss.

England began this series with a 169-run victory at Cardiff, but were hammered by 405 runs in the second Test at Lord's.

The fourth Test in the five-match series starts at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Thursday and England will win back the Ashes urn with a victory.

"It is good they can put Lord's behind them and put it down to a bad performance," added Bayliss.

"They were disappointed and a little embarrassed in the way they played.

"To move forward you have to be honest with yourself and admit your mistakes and they certainly were after that game at Lord's. They showed in this match what they are capable of.

"We have a few extra days off now. You get halfway through a series like this and there are always a few little niggles with batters and bowlers, so it will be good to give those an extra couple of days' rest."

One England player who will miss the fourth Test is seam bowler James Anderson.

After taking 6-47 in the first innings at Edgbaston, England's leading all-time wicket-taker suffered a side injury in the second innings.

Bayliss said Anderson's replacement is likely to come from the group of players who have been included in recent squads, with Durham's Mark Wood, who missed the Edgbaston Test with an ankle injury, favourite to return.

"We're not really sure about Woody at the moment, but he is improving every day. We are hopeful he will be right for Trent Bridge," he added.

Michael Clarke dropped Ian Bell with the Warwickshire batsman on 20

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc hit his fifth Test fifty to give the tourists some hope

Australia are completely and utterly on the ropes against a rampant England on the First Day of the Fourth Test of the Ashes at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Australia are on the absolutely unbelievable scoreline of 21-5 with Broad currently having astounding bowling figures of 4-6! Rogers, Warner and Marsh have all gone for ducks (no runs).

The way things are going, the Aussies are going to struggle to get into triple figures!

If England - who are 2-1 up in the Series with this Test and then one more to go - win this Test then they win the Ashes, and it certainly looks like they mean business here.

The Aussies are just being completely torn apart by a rampant bunch of English lions.

From BBC Sport:

Five-wicket haul for Stuart Broad

Aus 29-6

We think this might be the fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket history. Even TMS scorer Andrew Samson doesn't know that one off the top of his head. Either way, Stuart Broad, asked to lead the attack in the absence of James Anderson, has produced another of his Ashes-winning spells. Add Trent Bridge 2015 to The Oval 2009 and Durham 2013. Mitchell Johnson is the new man, England fans don't even bother to taunt him. He's batting earlier than he would have bowled first change.

In case you're wondering, Australia's lowest ever Ashes score is 36 at Edgbaston in 1902. That's still in danger. I can still see a few empty seats inside Trent Bridge. Can you imagine if you were late for this start? "I was at Trent Bridge in 2015, didn't get there until lunch". Did you suffer misery at the hands of the Aussies through the 1990s? Maybe you stayed up all night through the whitewashes of 2006-07 and 2013-14. How sweet does this feel?

if I had to sit through more than 30 minutes of that shyte I'd put the gun to the head and end the misery

There'll be many Australians doing that right now all thanks to an extraordinary England performance on the First Day of the Fourth Test.

England bowler Stuart Broad (right) took an amazing 8-15 to help skittle the Aussies out for just 60 in what was the shortest first innings in Test history

History has been made at Trent Bridge. Australia are all out for just 60. It is the shortest first innings in Test history, lasting just 18.3 overs. Their top scorer was Johnson, with 13.

As for England bowler Broad, he took a amazing 8-15!

Australia are being ripped apart and, by the looks of things, the entire nation is in mourning.

Surely England have won the Ashes now.

It's the Second Day of the Fourth Test at Trent Bridge and England have declared on 391-9 in their First Innings, with Root scoring 130, over twice as many runs as the entire Australian team scored yesterday, giving them a first innings lead of 331 over Australia, who managed just a paltry 60 on yesterday's history-making day. Australia's innings yesterday was the shortest first innings EVER in Test cricket.

England have taken two early Aussie wickets in the second innings have a just taken a third, with Australia currently on 136-3, as England look to win the Ashes as soon as possible.

History was also made today at Trent Bridge, with the ONE MILLIONTH delivery to be bowled in Test cricket in England.

Australia are currently on 253-9 in the Second Innings on Day Three of the Fourth Test, trailing by 78 runs.

Just one more wicket is all we need and we will win the 2015 Ashes with one more match still to be played.

Let's get the party started! England's players get straight into the beers to celebrate with their WAGs after regaining The Ashes against woeful Australia

England will not get to lift the Ashes urn until the Fifth and final Test at the Oval

England's cricketers got straight into party mode after reclaiming The Ashes in emphatic style today against a woeful Australian team.

After annihilating the Aussies on the first day of the third test, England wrapped up the series two days later, prompting wild celebrations from players and fans.

The victors were filmed spraying champagne over each other and reporters as they toasted the triumph in the dressing room straight after the victory.

Star man: Stuart Broad, England's hero of the series, celebrates after helping the national side reclaim the Ashes today

Earlier, the team's glamorous WAGs were seen applauding their victorious other halves from the stands on a sunny morning at Trent Bridge.

The English national side has been known for its exuberant Ashes celebrations - in 2013 the team apologised for causing offence following their post-match antics at The Oval cricket ground.

And in 2005 Freddy Flintoff was famously photographed at Downing Street looking bleary-eyed after partying all night following his team's win.

Among those leading the celebration tonight will be hero of the series Stuart Broad - hated by Australian fans - whose bowling on Thursday single-handedly destroyed the Aussies.

The English victory marks revenge for the 5-0 whitewash down under in 2013-14 - extending Australia's winless run on UK soil to four Test series.

Party time: The England players were filmed toasting the victory in the dressing room with champagne

Soaked: Sky reporter Ian Ward is predictably sprayed with champagne as the victors get into party mode following the win

Expressing his delight at the result, England captain Alastair Cook told reporters: 'It's unbelievable. I couldn't be happier. For what we've been through over the last 18 months, to play like we did has been fantastic. I'm so proud of this young team and the way they've taken this opportunity.'

While England celebrated, Australian captain Michael Clarke bid farewell to international cricket stating: 'I am retiring. I don't want to jump ship so my last Test will be at the Oval and I will give it one last crack.'

'Never want to walk away but my performances this series and over the last 12 months have not been acceptable to me, I pride myself on leading from the front, it has been disappointing.

'You build yourself up for the big tournaments, I tried my best, the boys tried their best but we have been outplayed. It is time for the next generation, the next captain to have his opportunity to build a team and get for the next Ashes series.'

Clarke's model and actress wife Kyly Clarke wiped tears away from her eyes as she watched him play one of his last matched for the national side - while Clarke himself also became tearful in a press conference.

All smiles: England players Joe Root and Adam Lyth toast the victory with beers in the dressing room

Proud WAGs: Partners of the England team clap from the box at Trent Brdge following the team's emphatic win this morning

Two of the series' star men Joe Root and Stuart Broad have stormed into contention for Sports Personality of the Year with Paddy Power listing them both as 8/1 on to win the award.

And the side is now bookmakers' favourite to land the Sports Personality Team of the Year award with Ladbrokes giving them 2/1 odds.

Despite watching his country slump to a miserable defeat, legendary Australian bowler Shane Warne was quick to congratulate England.

Posting on Twitter, he wrote: 'Congratulations to Alastair Cook & the England team on the Ashes victory. Played fearless & entertaining cricket, was nice to watch!!'

Plenty of England fans on the other hand took the opportunity to gloat. Gary Lineker wrote: 'Surprised even those minnows of world cricket, Australia, couldn't last until the first Premier League game of the season kicked off.'

And Sky News anchorwoman Kay Burley tweeted: 'For sale: Eleven Australian cricket bats. Hardly used' before adding 'better luck next time chaps'.

Feeling the defeat: Watching her husband, Australia's captain Michael Clarke, announce his retirement following his team's dismal display, Australian model and actress Kyly Clarke was seen wiping tears away from her eyes

Emotional announcement: Australian captain Michael Clarke appeared to well up as he told reporters he would be retiring

Tears of joy: Grown men are reduced to tears as they celebrate winning the Ashes in Nottingham today

Cheers! Jimmy Anderson gets a hug from one of his teammates as England's players celebrate with well-earned beers

Proud partners: England's players wives and girlfriends cheered as the team cruised to victory against a woeful Australian team today

Ecstatic: England's Jos Buttler was in tears as he was congratulated by his mother Patricia in the stands this morning

Delighted captain: England's skipper Alastair Cook gives the crowd at Trent Bridge in Nottingham a thumbs up today

Little and large: Stuart Broad and Joe Root give a thumbs up after helping England to reclaim The Ashes today

Reclaiming The Ashes: Mark Wood and Ben Stokes raise their arms in victory as an England flag flutters behind them at Trent Bridge today

It's the First Day of the Fifth and Final Test of the 2015 Ashes at the Kia Oval in London.

England won the toss and decided to field first.

The result of this match doesn't really matter as England have already won the Ashes, and will be presented with the famous Ashes urn and the Waterford crystal trophy at the end of this Test.

The England players clapped Australia's Michael Clarke onto the field as he went to the crease to bat after he announced that he is to retire from cricket at the end of this Ashes. The 34-year-old from New South Wales has played 114 Tests and 245 ODIs for Australia since his debut against India in October 2004.

England have been made to follow-on on Day Three of the Fifth Test.

Australia scored 481 in the First Innings, with England replying with 149. This wasn't enough to avoid the follow-on, so England are batting again and are currently on 31-1 at lunch, trailing by 301 runs.

But as far as the Ashes are concerned, England have already won, meaning this match is pretty meaningless.

Day Three of the Fifth Test (at the Kia Oval, London)

Latest (at lunch)

1st Innings
Australia: 481

England: 149 (Ali 30, Wood 24; Johnson 3-21, Marsh 3-30; 48.4 overs)

2nd Innings
England: 31-1
(Cook 12*, Lyth 10; Siddle 1-1; 17.0 overs)

England lead the five-match Series 3-1.
