Daddy? Are you kidding me, your're probably old enough to be my grandmother. As for getting your humour, why are jokes about Albertans okay, but racial or gay jokes not?

Even if I was old enough to be your grandma, which I doubt....I would be a grandma that would not whine and whimper unlike the grandson...who would probally have been raised near a oil rig in Alberta.

:laughing9: :laughing9: :laughing9: Old enough to be your grandmother? Well, you brightened my day with that one. Guess that puts you in Pampers ... and explains some of your posts. hee hee

Mind you, I'd love a grandmother like Pea ... eventually she's gonna end up one of those feisty old ladies that swat people with their canes at protest rallies. For now, we have to enjoy her in her prime ... which means she's got more energy than my Jack Russell and more bite than Barq's!

Gay jokes??? I love gay jokes! I have a whole collection I can pass along if you'd enjoy them. As a dyke, everyone I know who hears a good one passes it along. I'm an equal-opportunist when it comes to humour. Everybody gets their turn in the dunk tank. Personally, I even enjoy entirely tasteless humour, but out of respect for the more delicate sensibilities in a forum, I do try to keep some sense of decorum. ;)

:violent1: Lighten up, for heaven's sake! :)

Hey, I'm not whinning, just pointing out that disparaging remarks against any group of people is wrong, may they be Alberta or Gay (or both).

I did go up close to this oil derrick near Drumheller once, but then I had to get going to the Tyrell museum. Unfortunately I've been able to spend limited time in Alberta.

Well if that is the case, then I don't care. Jokes are jokes, but it is so hard to know what one can joke about and what one can't.

So basically anything goes?

Well cosmos is a little bias :p For the last time, I will joke about anything I like. Just like morghabi will post topics he likes. You want a board your way...go start one. And I know that the posters posting here from alberta, in NO way re-present the people of Alberta.

Does that also apply for people from BC on this board?

Actually, DasFX, humour is a difficult talent online. I started a thread a while back about this. Here is a quote from some interesting info I was reading:

Humor, in CMC {computer-mediated communication }, is an area that has been examined very little. Although jokes are widely distributed on the Internet, real humor discourse is harder to find. Many CMC scholars have argued that the lack of visual and auditory information in computer-mediated talk strips cues to status, appearance, identity and gender (Baum, 1995). The author examines the topic as to how humorous performance can be used to create group solidarity, group identity, and individual identity within the CMC environment.
Humor is an embedded socioemotional aspect of human's character. It is a "specially marked, artful way of speaking that sets up or represents a special interpretive frame within which the act of speaking is to be understood" (Bauman and Briggs, 1990). Many nonverbal cues also exist in relating humor, such as a wink, gesture, posture, and facial expression. The absence of non-verbal and other material cues to identity frees participants of online discourse of the dependency of physical materials. One way to express emotion online is through emoticons (see Cues and Emoticons).
The site is: http://sjsu.sjweb.net/1/discourse.html

I do think some degree of care need be used with online humour, but once you've got to know the people and their level of tolerance, you've got more latitude. I could probably say something to Pea that she would find funny, yet if you said the same thing it may be offensive. The difference being I've known Pea for nearly 20 years in real life.

I do think anything goes ... provided it's done with a gentle hand. The longer each of us is here and the better we get to know one another, the less care we need to take. Like real life, online relationships do require time to build trust.

Now you know ... I love gay jokes. Even raunchy ones. But there are other lesbians here who might not appreciate them. Feel free to PM me with any you run across that may not be "suitable for all viewers". I'm always up for a laugh. Others you can post under the joke thread.

To be honest, I find the whole homophobic issue quite funny. I don't take myself that seriously nor do I take anyone elses opinion to heart, as a rule.

I see this entire exchange as a way of getting to know one another. It's exactly the practice we need to find out how to communicate, to learn where others draw their lines. Face it ... most of us come here for fun. Our idea of fun may be discussing politics, but it's still about having entertaining exchanges with others. If we were all gathered around a table in a restaurant, it would be easier to read individuals, but that ain't how it is.

So, to be clear, your grandmother comment gave me a chuckle and I responded. There was not criticism or disapproval intended. I just thought it was funny.

It wasn't meant to be funny, I seriously think she is old enough to be my crazy grandmother stuck on some island in the Straits of Juan de Fuca!

Well, as I said ... if she's old enough to be your grandmother, you must be very young and, as such, forgiven a lack of world experience. I find some of your views disagreable but since you must be quite young, it makes sense.

Pea is not crazy ... but she's not exactly like everyone else either. She marches to the beat of her own accordian, and if you happen to be able to keep up with her, you're in for a treat. She's a very interesting woman.
