I remember him visiting Expo 67.
Expo 67 : Thursday June 22 1967
He made a god impression, as I recall as did Haile Selassie.
I remember the Queen visiting Bolton in '88.
King Bhumibol, who was born in Cambridge in the US state of Massachusetts, acceded to the throne on 9 June 1946
No birthers in Thailand, eh?
His father was enrolled in the public health programme at Harvard University, which is why he's the only monarch in history ever to have been born in the US.
The king was the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty. Each monarch in this dynasty also has a Rama name. Bhumibol Adulyadej was Rama IX:
- Rama I, the Great (1782–1809), Phutthayotfa Chulalok (27 years)
- Rama II (1809–1824), Phutthaloetla Naphalai (15 years)
- Rama III (1824–1851), Nangklao (27 years)
- Rama IV (1851–1868 ), Mongkut (17 years)
- Rama V, the Great, (1868–1910), Chulalongkorn (42 years)
- Rama VI (1910–1925), Vajiravudh (15 years)
- Rama VII (1925–1935), Prajadhipok (10 years)
- Rama VIII (1935–1946), Ananda Mahidol (11 years)
- Rama IX (1946–2016), Bhumibol Adulyadej (70 years)
His U.S. birth certificate reads simply "
Baby Songkla", as the parents had to consult his uncle, King
Rama VII (Prajadhipok), then head of the House of Chakri, for an auspicious name. The king chose
Bhumibol Adulyadej, meaning "strength of the land, incomparable power" (from
Sanskrit: भूमिबल अतुल्यतेज,
IAST:
Bhūmibala Atulyatēja).
