Sustainability: Our Challenge. Our Future.

That is the theme selected by the United Nations to motivate the world for International Youth Day 2009. International Youth Day is an open door for Canadian youth, and youth throughout the world, to express concerns and ideas to sustain the planet through future generations. There is absolutely no doubt that our world is undergoing massive struggles right now—whether it’s the seemingly-eternal battle raging on between the western world and Middle Eastern theocracies, or the every-day tragedy of homelessness and hunger at home, the statement that we are a troubled world is irrefutable.

On the occasion of International Youth Day, Her Excellency The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, issued a message to Canadians (and particularly to Canadian youth). The Governor General touched on the many issues that ravage the Earth, and the key role that youth have to play when it comes to ensuring a brighter and sustainable future. Speaking to Canadian youth, Her Excellency said, “I am convinced that you have the determination, courage and power to turn things around and get involved, to establish a new era of innovation, social responsibility and solidarity.”

So, expanding on the Governor General’s message to Canadian youth, what role do you think that youth should be playing when it comes to national policy and strategy? Is youth participation and input an essential part of good government? Since a sustainable future is of such key relevance to youth, do they have a special or elevated role to play on matters of environment?

Kids aren't stupid. I think more and more of them are becoming concerned with what homo sapiens' future will be like. I bet most are aware we can't continue as is, concerning virtually unbridled capitalism and consumerism, Earth's welfare (and hence, our own welfare), etc.

Judging by the idiots in control, I vote we hand over government and the corporations to anyone under thirty. I think they are far more aware than the present gang of thugs running the show.

Indubitably. We could con the existing crew away with the offer of a $800/plate luncheon, and slip the kids in the side door. :D

The upcoming generation is destined to make the same mistakes that we have if we don't include education in the picture. Take this Costa Rican youth, Juan Pinto, for example (Explore | Costa Rica). Educated at EARTH University in Costa Rica, he is willing to devote his life to sustainable practices and conservation, the embodiment of this year's International Youth Day theme. And all it took was a little education.

Bugger the military. Let them have CF 100s. We could cut back the politician's pay cheques and pensions. That should help the economic short fall they created.

I think it's highly important that youth be involved, learn about, and lend their voices to politics.

I recall an incident with a young man we're both familiar with Paradox, who started a site on facebook dedicated to speaking out against the proposed coalition. A Liberal from his home town (Dr. MJ Willard) showed up on that site, and told him to zip it until he was old enough to have a vote. I nearly lost it. Such an engaged young man, with more political knowledge than half the adults I know, but, because she didn't like his conclusion, she tried to shut him down with 'you're too young'. And he was just stating his opinions.

Good idea. There was no problem with fisheries before people started mass fishing, processing, etc. Native nets are quite negligible in comparison to nets these things use:
