I am inclined to think that it would be one big step in doing exactly what you suggest, dealing with the bigger issue.
Again Haggis I'm lead back to my argument about choice. People rarely react positively to being forced to do anything. And just because there's no shopping on Sundays doesn't neccessarily mean that people would be wise enough to make sure they spent time with their kids. Poor parents are the way they are for a reason. It's sad but true. These children would just be plunked in front of a tv or something. And tv's not even any good on Sunday! :)

Wow! galaniomama is getting good at picking topics :) I beg to differ with you to eastcoastrob. Not that what I think really matters, or what anybody else thinks...we all do our own thinking :) but we can still be friends :p

This is why I use the word "drone" alot, because I see people all the time stuck in modes of automation...they just go through the motions of life. Thats why anything like charlie or a little dance in the streets puts big smiles on their face they wake up!

I know many people who do not have cable...at first it was my god what are we going to do? what will we do to amuse ourselves? well they do not miss it at all, they do family stuff or friend things. They watch a movie or go to the show....I see elderly people all day who should take a walk around the block and see and smell some nice flowers, or watch some kids in a playground...no instead they watch TV. The same is said for sunday shopping...life was just fine when there was no sunday shopping, just like life was fine before bank cards, in fact you probally had more money when there were no bank cards.

You cannot believe what fine exciting people come out of a upbring of no television or any shopping at all...There are many many examples of this on the island...I know these things cause I live here, and have for most of my life, and I am nosey so I find out about people. There are still people on this island that bring there childern up in complete isolation...and cbc did a fine documentary "49 Degrees" about the oke family who raised 11 childern on the beach.. 2 of the boys became the best surfers canada, and the nicest boys you would ever want to meet...My neice is a west coast surfer..so I met very interesting people 8)
There is something very unique about individuals not brought up on the stale milk toast we are fed every day.

I think you would be very surprised at the results of no shopping on sunday...people would be forced to make their own intertainment and amusement with their friends and family...which in the end is the best thing that could happen 8)

You say that poor parents are the way they are for a reason. Yes, and I am saying part of the reason can be found in the very existence of Sunday shopping.

As for choice, and people not liking to be forced to do anything, I have to say that a ban on Sunday shopping doesn't force people to do anything at all... quite the opposite, in fact. I have to say, the idea of people up in arms because they are 'forced' not to shop sounds a bit silly to me, actually.

Haggis,
In regards to your earlier question of whether the jewish community is in an uproar of no sunday shopping....no. There really is no real arguements going on between different religions. The main arguement going on is whether or not small businesses will be affected negativley. You see in Nova Scotia there are a lot of small businesses, and depending on the size of your store you are permitted to be open (movie theatres, theatres, bars, and casinos are open though). But if the big stores like costco are able to be open on sunday that takes away the business these stores get from the people who somehow forget to pick up milk during the week.
I am proud that Nova Scotia is the only place in North America that does not allow sunday shopping...the BBC even had a thing about this the other night. I do not want to be like the rest of Canada, or even the States for that matter. I think that this is the thing that makes us better than the rest...it matters to us to have a day when work is stopped and everyone can just chill.
I am a university student, and last christmas sunday shopping was allowed for the 10 weekends before christmas...and i had to work them because i didn't want to ask for the time off when so many other people did. I got really behind on my projects, and i could have gotten higher marks on my exams had i had that extra day to study. No university student would put a minimum wage job above school...it doesnt pay enough...but if sunday shopping is allowed a lot of us will lose that day of studying

Haggis, I don't remember what faction of the Protestant church it was, it was a long time ago. Maybe some of the posters from Ontario could help me out here. What I really remember is the vicious bickering back and forth between the pros and the cons, some of those people could learn a thing or here if they came to this board, like how to debate civilly.

But to each their own. Some want it, some don't and life is all about choices, at least I like that part of what Canada has to offer up.

Hollaback, you may loose Sunday for studying, but you'll probably gain a Saturday or other week night that was put aside for working. And I totally agree with you, nobody should have to put an $8 hour in front of school.

I'd've liked to introduced research results, both pro and con, on this subject in order to definitely answer certain questions on this subject, but there appears to be quite a dearth of said studies online, probably because the question of Sunday shopping is practically a non-issue in North America other than in Nova Scotia where it is a current event.

The comments posted here have been great, some posts have given me a better understanding as to why people might prefer the option of Sunday shopping, yet other posts have helped cement my own view that we, as a society, would be far better off to restore a 'day of rest' into the works.

Pea, I will be shopping pretty much every chance I get. This little "diamond in the rough" needs new carpeting, tile, flooring, paint, light fixtures ad nauseaum.

But I'm sure once I'm done decorating and stuff I'll be shopped out. OMG did I say that?

Went to school with her sister - Jean. Her mom was my french teacher. the kids were a little off the wall somewhat - i think there are seven kids, anyhow, this daughter was near the end of the line, so allowed to be a little quirky. yeah, we still go up there and have a look around at least once a year. the place is so beautiful, and i can't believe they forced them out. so stupid. like they were hurting anyone.

I heard an interesting discussion about this on CBC yesterday. One woman mentioned that they now have Sunday School on Saturday mornings....and the point was made that in NS, they have Sunday shopping for the 6 weeks before Christmas...now isn't that a hypocritical thing? In order to satisfy the Christian community, you don't have Sunday shopping, except for the ones that help most with destroying the concept of the most important Christian holiday.

I'm sure that makes sense to somebody.

That is an interesting point, TenPenny! Mind you, I think it is one of those more or less quibbling points that get in the way of things, but it definitely has that 'oh yeah!' aspect.

Hey just to let those of you who may want to know, Nova Scotians had a pleb on whether or not they wanted sunday shopping. 45% voted yes, while 55% voted no. I obviously voted no, so I am very happy. The majoirty of votes were from the Halifax area (capital), while outside municipalities voted no. I doubt this will be the last we hear of this issue, and it will not surprise me if the legislature will pass it irregarless...so thats the scoop

Hello , I'd like to introduce my self, I have been fighting Sunday shopping for years in Nova Scotia. My friend peter hare and I started a web site called Save Our Sundays http://saveoursundays.tripod.com in the year 2000. Peter has since passed away, and I continue to carry the torch. We have several people that helped us including some MLA's and different groups across our province. We also worked under one group called Dare to be different. www.daretobedifferent.ca . I hope that other provinces join our unique province and say no to Sunday shopping.

You won't see the gov't introduce it; they've been looking for a way to keep the status quo, and now they have it. I used to be against Sunday shopping, but now I don't care. It's nice to be able to pick up a cold six pack on a Sunday afternoon.

Maybe one has to look beyond the quick convenience of Sunday shopping for a closer look at what is happening in our society to make Sunday shopping seem such a 'necessity' by so many.
