A new study conducted by University of Michigan researchers found that eating the BBQ staple shortens your life by 36 minutes.
The School of Public Health, Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the Nature Food journal ranked 5,800 foods in the United States based on minutes gained or lost of “healthy” life per serving. With “healthy life gains” described as an increase in “good-quality and disease-free life expectancy.”
It found that beef, processed meat, lamb, pork, cheese and sugar-based drinks decrease lifespan the most. Nuts, fruits, vegetables and whole grains do the opposite.
And some good news: The study found peanut butter and jelly sandwiches add 33 minutes to your life.
The study encouraged more health-conscious diets.
