Strange Spam

I just got a spam email in my mailbox about leasing a helicopter or an airplane. Not that I actually read it, but I'm forced to have a quick peak at it when it becomes selected in Outlook.


Who in their right mind would think that sending out millions of spams about leasing or buying an airplane would yield any success? If you have that kind of money, you're probably already part of some pilots club or something. :roll:

You get far better spam than I do, Andem. Most of mine has to do with Nigerian Princes who need to give me money or something.

Lately I've been getting some that are just blank though. No subject, no content, just an obviously made-up name. Very odd.

No1, you being a Linux user you can battle spam pretty easily. Open up Synaptic and download SpamAssassin.

Then, if you use K-mail, you can set up SpamAssassin to block that terrible spam by clicking on the menu items Tools -> Anti-Spam Wizard... and select SpamAssassin to filter your e-mail.

Works great for me. All of that junk gets deposited directly in the Trash folder.

Now, when you open up K-mail, you should see something like this....

The spam indicator bar tells you how sure Spamassassin is that this particular e-mail is spam. It will then file it as you've indicated (like moving it to the trash or a spam holding folder).

The buttons up top allow you to manually identify spam e-mail that Spamassassin wasn't sure of. Or you can tell Spamassassin that this e-mail should not be considered as spam.

It's very flexible and will "learn" what e-mail it should and shouldn't be blocking, based on the information you give it.

It's a great tool... especially being free!

I've been getting blank ones, and more spam about Viagra than you can shake a stick at! For crying out loud, I'm female and don't need it!!!!

That Spamassassin is easy to use, it detected viagra, RX pills and those ones with no subject or content. Thats whats good about linux, so many awsome programs availble for free and that synaptic makes it a breeze to install.

btw- I have yet to get any virus's, i have that clam that runs at start up, but I rarley restart computer and I did today for hell of it and ziltch.

Btw- Do you use "Guard dog" for a firewall, Judland? I do and it is a heck of a lot easier to use than the Macafee one I had many moons ago on windows. It seems pretty good.

I have used GuardDog in the past, and yes I agree that it's relatively easy to configure and use.

At the moment, I just have the little Kanotix firewall running in the background. It does what I need it to do.

Simple Beginner - Intermediate - Expert levels that auto-configure.

Oh, and P.S.

No viruses, spyware or system crashes since we've started using Linux over three years ago now. Our PC is only turned off during lightning storms and when I've upgraded hardware components.

No system crashes or screens that "freeze" anymore for me either since Feb when I made the switch. I have not looked back. Open source is the way to go. Amazing really, since Microsoft has so much money.......In my opinion Linux seems more stable, actually very stable and the biggest benefit your not breaking the bank when you want new programs. That Klik is a good way of getting programs as well.

I sure don't miss those 15 or 30 program "tryouts" with limited features either...........

Is that Kanotix Firewall "better"? I see it on synaptic. I have had no problems with guarddog yet, should I switch, maybe? or really no need to?

No, if you're using GuardDog, then there's no real reason to switch; at from what I can tell.

Yup, all that money I'm saving on software goes into my hardware upgrades. Although, there's real little reason for those as well. I'm still running the latest Linux OS and software, with all the bells and whistles, with two year old technology.

Although I did just recently replaced my motherboard, but that was because a couple capacitors were about to blow. The tech. at the computer store I shop at told me that if my PC's been on for three years straight that it shouldn't have been unsuspected.

I don't like spammers.

But I apologize for responding to them for it is really just encouragement.

Yet if my system can block these `people `out , why can't CanCon?

You had to go dig back 3 years to find something to complain about? How many spammers do you see in recent threads?

edited to add... my apologies... it looks like the mods already zapped it, so it was likely a recent post. Like usual, quick draw mods. Thanks guys, and again, my apologies for not paying better attention scratch.
