King advocates change. Since the French system is more fair, Americans should move towards it.

The French system is more fair? 50% of Americans don't pay federal income taxes at all, would 'more fair' be that 100% didn't pay fed taxes?.. Is that what you have in mind?

Are you a multi-billionaire?

I'm working on it

If not, then how did you come to feel sorry for multi-billionaires?

I don't. I suppose that I'm a little old fashioned in my belief that this demographic should be punished and ostracized by society because they succeeded at something

To be fair, everyone must be required to pay their share of the burden according to what they can afford.

On what they can afford, that's fairness and equality to you?

Your entire argument is founded on intangibles and your selective definition of 'fairness'.. What is 'fair' is a consumption tax

University should be merit based and free.

It is merit based already and in Canada it's subsidized to the tune of 75+%... It may as well be free already.

Dumb wealthy children can pay the full university bill unless of course Daddy buys the university a new wing and claims it as a charitable donation...

Wouldn't that wing provide more educational opportunities for everyone?

Anyone living at or below the poverty line should get assistance.

They do.

The more you are above the poverty line, the higher the rate.

That's pretty much the system that we have today.

I'd recognize the right of uber wealthy to decide how their excess taxes benefit society.

How big of you. In the end, the 'uber wealthy' are practicing that right by moving their wealth off shore (and sometimes themselves).

I followed your link and it does appear that nearly 50% of Americans are retired, children, sick, and lately a growing number of unemployed and imprisoned. I didn't know it was that bad.

The baby boomer demographic has arrived at retirement. At the same time the US economy is sputtering and stalling...

If the wealthy elite pony up additional cash, this looming crash could have a soft landing. If wealthy elite "Let them eat cake"... well let's just say I could see how this could get real ugly.

This event alone will put huge pressure on the costs to the system.

I believe that the US (Canada and Europe as well) has to drastically cut the scope and size of gvt in order to manage the crunch.

Even if you froze and commandeered all of the assets of the millionaires and billionaires in the US, you could never hope to pay off the debt or likely even the annual deficit... More importantly, the ramifications will result in decreased investment in the country and more (and more) people and enterprises moving out of the jurisdiction.

You'd be wise to get this through your head EAO, all 'new' money originates from the private sector and if you impede that process, the tax base will shrink dramatically.
