That is the lower portion , further up it changes into the Chilliwack , or Vedder River . The canal was built by the farmers for land reclamation and flood control . Killed a huge sockeye run and removed lots of prime coho rearing area .

I spent part of my preteen youth living in Slesse Park. It was a nice place for a kid.

A few weeks ago I saw some salmon attempting to climb the weir - which I think was built in the early 1800s - on the River Croal at Moses Gate Country Park right near where I live. Thirty years ago the river was one of the most polluted in Europe. Now it's clean and a haven for wildlife.

The River Croal is a tributary of the River Irwell, which itself is a tributary of the River Mersey. The Mersey runs westwards from Stockport, south of Manchester, to the Irish Sea at Liverpool. It gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon, meaning "boundary river ". For centuries it has formed part of the boundary between the ancient counties of Cheshire and Lancashire.
