just wondering if you think these people are normal?

How do you define normal, JLM? At one time being black was considered abnormal. A woman working outside the home was considered abnormal.

A woman preacher in Church of England was considered abnormal (now they permit female preachers). I remember one opponent of women preacher remarked (I was living in Britain at that time).

‘A woman preaching is like a dog walking on two legs. The surprising thing is not that it does it badly, the surprising thing is that it can do it at all.”

Normal is totally arbitrary. What is normal in one time and one place may not be normal in another time and another place.

So why make it "normal"? I still view it as demented

One persons "normal" is another persons "nasty." To each their
own in the privacy of their own homes as long as everyone is
willing and nobody gets hurt. It's not my bag, but I can choose
to get spanked or not, I guess...

To spank, or not to spank....I'll pass. Check Please!

You have that right, Islandpacific, think of it what you will. Just remember, normal means squat, it means nothing.

As to me, I don’t pass judgment. Also, I don’t even ask the question if something is normal. I am sure all of us are abnormal in some ways. Are you left handed? You are abnormal. Red headed? Abnormal. Too tall? Abnormal. Too short? Abnormal and so on.

In my opinion, ‘normal’ is a silly and meaningless concept.

So you are free to think of it what you want. Just remember, what is demented to you may be normal to somebody else (and what is normal to you may be demented to somebody else).

You've got it right I.P. I'm old fashioned I know, we were brought up as kids with certain values & some of those values were a little on the strict side, like men having their hair no longer than 2" above the collar :lol: and wearing a tie at the table for supper :lol: and addressing our elders as Sir or Madam :lol:, but there was a lot of the stuff there was a good reason for, like there were less dysfunctional families in those days and less troubled adolescents. Of course the start of it was just prior to and during the reign of the illustrious P.E.T. Everyone did his own thing whether or not he/she had the brains or judgment to figure out if it was wise or not and then when things didn't work out, who cares, you just go to the welfare office and get a cheque. Now the criminals have all the rights, Pickton is getting another trial, while his victims families will never rest. The BAcon Boys of Abbotsford fame are suing the cops for hassassment, while their neighbours live in a state of terror. I know Sir Joe is a very tolerant guy, but somewhere in the sand there has to be lines you don't cross and Sir Joe has never really said where his lines or if there are any.

You're getting ridiculous now Sir Joe- "normal" is not a point, it's a range- perhaps normal height for men is from 5'3"- 6'6". It differs whether it's physical properties or customs, some things change others don't or very little. There used to be a few things pertaining to sex that were considered abnormal, now it's be whittled down to pedophilia and that is really about it. I wonder when that too will become acceptable. You must recognize that the human race is on a decline, if you don't should see the optometrist.

JLM, I was also brought up with same values as you, we are almost the same age. We probably held very similar views say, 30 or 35 eyars ago.

The difference is that I am a liberal and you are a conservative. While your views probably have hardly changed over time, mine have evolved over time.

That's just it, JLM, we do have to draw a line in the sand. For ourselves, and ourselves only. I can't say spanking is a thrill for me, I had enough of 'em when I was growing up and I can't say I ever liked it...

... but if I'm to insist on the freedom to do as *I* please, it would be pretty hypocritical for me to decide that I should have the right to either determine or judge what someone else likes.

It's all about consent, imo. If 2 consenting adults are engaging in an activity that I don't enjoy, it's none of my business.

Frankly, I think people who bunjee jump or cliff dive are a whole lot crazier than people who like to spank... but meh... who am I to judge? loll

If ya wanna bring up words like demented I think this is the wrong place for that too - I save such words for true obscenities like one half of the world starving to death, or suffering from lack of medications, or clean water, while the other half of the world not only has leftovers from dinner, but chucks 'em in the garbage, then takes a cocktail of different pills to contend with the various illness brought on by a life of excess, and sits down to watch the nightly news about famine and genocide in places farther away than their own back yard.

Now that is demented.

You're wrong about one thing for sure I am NOT a conservative, also I'm NOT a liberal and I'm NOT an N.D.P.er any longer. I don't buy the philosophies of any of them. As for normal, see attached...........from the dictionary online

  1. Conforming with, adhering to, or constituting a norm, standard, pattern, level, or type; typical: normal room temperature; one's normal weight; normal diplomatic relations.
  2. Biology. Functioning or occurring in a natural way; lacking observable abnormalities or deficiencies.
  3. (Abbr. n or N) Chemistry.
    1. Designating a solution having one gram equivalent weight of solute per liter of solution.
    2. Designating an aliphatic hydrocarbon having a straight and unbranched chain of carbon atoms.
  4. Mathematics.
    1. Being at right angles; perpendicular.
    2. Perpendicular to the direction of a tangent line to a curve or a tangent plane to a surface.
    1. Relating to or characterized by average intelligence or development.
    2. Free from mental illness; sane.
n.
  1. Something normal; the standard: scored close to the normal.
  2. The usual or expected state, form, amount, or degree.
    1. Correspondence to a norm.
    2. An average.
  3. Mathematics. A perpendicular, especially a perpendicular to a line tangent to a plane curve or to a plane tangent to a space curve.

Quite so JLM, so my wife, who is 5’ tall, would be considered abnormal. Or a basketball player who is 7’ tall would be considered abnormal.

now it's be whittled down to pedophilia and that is really about it. I wonder when that too will become acceptable.

No, it won’t.

You must recognize that the human race is on a decline, if you don't should see the optometrist.

Human race is not on the decline, it is evolving, undergoing change. By all indications, we are a better race compared to 100 years ago. We are healthier, live longer, are more prosperous, more tolerant, more progressive, more just etc.

On what basis do you conclude that we are on the decline? I can see only one thing on the decline, religion. And I don’t consider that a bad thing at all.

By almost any indicator, we are progressing, getting better. On what basis do you conclude that we are declining?

I said "men" (for women perhaps it's 4'10" - 6'1") (My wife is just under 5', so it has to be shorter than her):lol::lol:

JLM, that is an appeal, hardly another trial. When you say another trial, that gives the impression that due to some reason, the judge declared the previous trial invalid and Pickton has to be tried all over again or released.

Appeal means the legal process is progressing as it should, what is wrong with that? Odious and horrible as this Pickton character may be, he is still entitled to the due process of law.

So don’t try to misrepresent facts just to make your point. It is not another trial, it is appeal of his conviction.

Yep, that's one of the most sensible posts on the whole thread. I hadn't really thought of "demented" in quite those terms, I'd have probably used "disgraceful" or "disgusting" or "criminal", but you have the right idea. I too don't care what consenting adults do, but when you are raising kids and grandchildren, you don't want them getting the idea that it's "normal" (Sorry S.J) or perfectly alright. So that why I think it should be kept to themselves.

I don’t know about you JLM, but I want my grandkids (when they come along) to grow up knowing that there are different types of people in the world, that everybody deserves equal rights in spite of their differences, and it is not upto us to judge people and separate them into categories such as good and bad.

I would like them to be exposed to everything in the world, at age appropriate level, of course.

That is how we brought up our son, we taught him that tolerance is the greatest virtue, everything else flows from tolerance. We did not try to shield him from the rest of the world, but let him be exposed to the world (again, at age appropriate level). He has turned out to be a fine young man, in the third year of medical school.
