Vereya, good points! But I also thought the same of your culture when it was reported about ten years ago that when Russian teen girls were asked about what they'd like to do with their future, almost 70% said they'd like to be prostitutes. Now what in your society would have precipitated such a shocking reply?

Vere, that is a great point, there are obviously a lot of skin-crawling child haters here. I can't believe that anyone would support such an obviously warped view on parenting...While it is not an easy job, it is a privilege and a gift to be a parent, and l am speaking as a parent.

Yes, Tamarin, there was such a time indeed. It was in the beginning and in the middle of the nineties. That was a very difficult time in Russia. It was shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, when the country's economy was in ruins, when the shelves in food shops were empty and when the crime was unbelievably high. At that time being a gangster was perfectly normal. I was a kid at that time, so I didn't actually see it myself, because I am from a very good family and we never participated in this kind of thing. But in larger cities, such as Saint-Petersburg, when people were killed in the streets in broad daylight it didn't really shock anyone. At that period the only people who had money, who ate well, and who could afford cars and nice clothes were mostly gangsters and the prostitutes that they had. And everyone could see that. So it is little wonder that a lot of girls, who didn't actually know what it was like, thought that prostitutes are the ones who have a nice life and have a good time. Right now everything's changed. It is not that way any longer.

I've read all of the replies here, and I feel like asking all of you a stupid question. What's the problem with your kids? Where did all these sophisticated-sounding diagnoses come from?
I have a lot to say about the society and the social atmosphere of my country, and few of these things would be complimentary, but no matter how bad the Russian society might be, we dont' have schoolchildren that have to take antidepressants or tranquilizers. We don't have parents arrest their children, because they don't see a way to deal with them. We don't have kids bringing guns to school and shooting their teachers and classmates. Now my questions is - is it something that you do very wrong as parents? Or is somehow the pressure on your young citizens so great, that they need a psychiatrist at a very early age? In my country if a child misbehaves at school or at home, it doesn't mean that the child needs medication, it means that the child needs discipline. From the medical and biological point of view people are basically the same everywhere, it is just the social/cultural setting that makes the difference. What do you think could be so very wrong with your social setting to bring forth these kinds of reactions?
Honestly, my two boys fight with each other, pull pranks on each other, drive me the missus and each other crazy. 'bout normal there.

They call adults Ma'am and Sir, my oldest is an LAC in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, my youngest is biding his two years to go. They both play Lacrosse, on a league team. They clean their room, they get good grades, they DO NOT play endless hours of vidiot games. 1 hour of outside time gets them 1/2 an hour of vidiot time. They do the dishes, they walk the dog, etc etc.

Apart from the typical sibling bickering, nothing wrong with them. But then again, they compare me to Shrek and the Drill Sgt. from Full Metal Jacket, but they love me, I love them, and they aren't causing shyte in the neighbourhood.

All without the uselessness of molly coddling and diverting accountablity. It is no one elses fault, but their own when they err.

Okay, so in regard to the thread, what has this have to do with the brutal trauma in actions of a mother from south carolina? V. was actually referring to the fact that others on this thread where sounding like they seriously hate children...

Well gee, glad to hear that everything's just hunky dory in the motherland.

I guess the Chernobyl kid that my family sponsored last year who had NO change of clothes, shoes that were her older sisters, and never stopped eating because at home there was very little food at any time, must have been an exception to the rule. Glad to see you came from a "good family" though. She must have come from a "bad" family.......What the hell does that mean? A poor family? One which doesn't adhere to the party line? What a crock.

Get real.
