Maybe not quite that simple, Gerry! My sister ran a day care in her house in Richmond B.C. for many years. After you put out a huge outlay to even get a license there is very little money to spread around.
I will use clean language. If there was so much money in daycare, I am sure that you would be owner of 10 of them.

Fees 4(1) The fee payable with an application under section 4(3) of the Act is (a) $200 for an initial licence, or (b) $100 for a renewal of a licence. (2) A fee referred to in subsection (1) is non-refundable

Oh, and JLM.... did you bother to read the entire article? The part where another daycare operator stated that SHE wouldn't be increasing her rates? I will lay odds it is because she pays more than minimum wage to her childcare workers, therefore, an increase in minimum wage would have little to no impact on her business.
Yeah, for licenses, but before you get the license an inspector goes over your house and yard with a fine tooth comb, mainly checking safety issues and unless your house is fairly new you'll likely be putting out a hefty outlay. On top of that there's toys, wagons, tricycles, games, books etc. to buy. In my sister's case there was a potential to take in $180 a day often a bit less because parents had time off or made other arrangements. You also have to provide meals and snacks for them. She did it for about 10 years and decided it was easier to just get a job. She actually lives in Cgy. now in Hidden Valley and works at a jewelry store. (Not getting rich there either)

Do the math jlm...... 1200/child/month..... 10 children per worker. on average, these day cares have 3-5 workers. do the math.
The extent of my knowledge was my sister's business, owner operated, she was licensed for 6 or 7 kids and there was restriction to the ages like she was allowed one or two infants and I think there was a maximum for number of kids under five. I'm not sure if $1200 per child/month is high or not. Ten years ago my sister was getting about $600 -$700 a month per child- pretty sure it was $30 a day. I know one thing, I'm not sure if I'd want a child or grandchild of mine getting 1/10 of the caretakers time for $60 a day.

That's a dayhome JLM.... big difference from a "daycare"..... I KNOW I've said this before, do some research on what you are "discussing".

When she had the business it was classified as a daycare, but that was in the '90s and early 21st century. I skimmed over about half of the regs. I wouldn't have the business on a bet, a lot of regs most of which are common sense, I know you have to responsible for survival of the kid if he/she licks the paint on the wall. I would think the owner of the business, should be able to earn $30 an hour clear just for all the responsibility, if one of the helpers is keeping the kids amused, he/she should probably get the equivalent of the baby sitting wage.
If you read the regs, then you know what qualifications the guys workers need to have. Do you think that they are going to work for minimum wage?
IF, he doesn't have any employees working for minimum wage, then what does it matter to him what the minimum wage is? It doesn't effect him. He has stated that he will have to increase his rates by $80/month/child. How does he come up with that? The minimum wage is going up $1 per hour. Again, do the math. Also, how do you explain the fact that one of his competitors does not have to increase her rates because of the minimum wage increase?
What it comes down to, is this guy is using the minimum wage increase as an excuse to raise his rates and further line his pockets.
Mea culpa, I thought Ms. Notley was bumping the minimum wage up close to $5 an hour. But even that still affects others earning above minimum wage, as the entire pyramid rises.
Yep, if you are part of the day care pyramid. If you are part of any pyramid that has minimum wage employees you might. If the $10 an hour employee gets bumped to $15, do you really think the guy who was earning $15.50 is going to be content to stay there?
Oh, I was sure I heard Ms. Notley saying she was giving them a boost to $15 an hour. What happened with that?
