Scrapping the Internet

You can't shut down the internet. You can create a second network and encourage people to join that mind you. But the internet technology is already out there.
Before the internet there were the BBS's, BBS's are still out there, one of my comp can still dial up and host a bulletin board..assuming I remembered the Sysop password for it.
Before that, there were CB radios..and there still are.
You can't shut down a network, just encourage people to something shinier.

You can't shutdown the network so to speak, but if the root dns servers were attacked, you could severly cripple it. Browsing by IP address wouldn't be very useful.

I never rely on a single source ITN and I do use my brain from time to time if I have to.Post your PHD in drivel I'll believe you. I've had you point out huge untapped reservoirs of oil off the coast of Florida for phuck sake. I asked you for a source, if you haven't got one or two places where I can assure myself that your connected to the RW in a solid manner you can't help me get off my errand train of thought. It's not my fault that I haven't benefitted from your accumulated wisdom it's your's because your a poor communicator, I reckon. Brain not brains,some of us only have one and can't take the time to consider exotic ideas like your expertise with drivel.:lol:

no way I could memorize all the ip addresses of the sites I browse. Can you imagine trying to memorize IP version 6 addresses? that would be scary

I'll be going at the end of the month anyway. I didn't say the US was going to stiffle the internet, I presented the article for some input by the resident brains and as you can see I got it and I trust it because I'v had good results from them lots of times. We have a communication problem, untill I'm convinced it's trouble on my end I'm afraid I'm stuck with my delusions which my perspectives could very well be. If you could present credentials for brain maintenance I'd be somewhat swayed. A good communicater should be able to reach a halfwit easily I think.:smile:

Not a problem at all, first thing I'd do is make a spreadsheet or database program, where you could assign your own name tag to a site and it would store the IP. Type in the tag and have it launch the IP. Site names individualized.

It would be easier to just open your host files and assign an ip address to given host name. Windows looks to the host file before querying dns.

But can any one nation do this? Supposedly there is no one person who knows the physical locations of all of them, plus the majority of them reside outside of any one nation. So how much damage could be done really? Sure there have been some DoS's on the root DNS's at times and the internet was painfully slow those days, but is there any way to irreversibly destroy the internet as a whole?

I believe the majority of the root dns severs reside in the US I believe, they used to be administered by the US government, ICANN admins them though apparently.

I was basing my assumption on this operator's DNS root name server faq. A lot do same to be outside the USA... but at the moment I am too lazy to count.
