Restaurant To Host 'White Appreciation Day'
A Colorado barbecue joint plans to offer a 10% discount to white customers next month, but critics say the idea is racist.
A Colorado barbecue restaurant is defying possible legal action to hold a day celebrating white people.
White customers will be offered a 10% discount during next month's promotion at Rubbin' Buttz BBQ and Country Cafe in the town of Milliken.
Edgar Antillon, the Hispanic owner of the business, told KUSA-TV: "We have a whole month for Black History Month.
"We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month.
"So we figured the least we could do is offer one day to appreciate white Americans."
Mr Antillon has hung up a sign at the business that reads: "White Appreciation Day! June 11th. Because all Americans should be celebrated."
But the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies warned the restaurant, located 49 miles (78km) north of Denver, could be sued.
Spokeswoman Jennifer McPherson said: "If someone felt like they were being discriminated against they could come to the civil rights division and file a complaint with our office and we would investigate that."
Weld County civil rights activist Ricardo Romero said the promotion perpetuates racism.
"It's wrong," told KUSA-TV. "If you're going to give a discount, give it to the whole community."
But Mr Antillon, a first-generation American born to Mexican parents, insists the idea aims to bring people together.
"We're all American," he said. "Plain and simple."
