Does anyone out there have a clue what this Referendum in Ontario is and can you explain it in simple terms - without political bafflegab or legalese? A non-partisan link would be most helpful....

What do people think about the proposed new System?

Personally I'd like it to only have one vote going to both.

Likewise I'd like to see a similar system in place federally.

You get one vote for an MP (first past the post) and that vote also counts towards a proportional representative based on party for an elected senate.

So if there were 100 senators it might work out that a party would have 40% of the vote and have a majority of the House of Commons but only have 40 senators.

Many have been the times when the guy running locally for the party I like has been a complete dork. This new thing gives you another option besides voting for the right guy locally and hoping the best party gets in.

MMP offers the citizenry MPPs that have not been elected. In terms of ingenious ways to improve our system, random selection could be no worse. MMP mixes political deadwood with the generally mediocre selections of the electorate. MMP makes the legislative assembly more fractious and minority government more likely. MMP costs more money as the assembly is packed with additional politicians who directly represent nobody.

Think of the MMP as the ''last past the post', or 'failed to start' selection system. Only losers win.

Only losers win.

I was looking for reasons not to like you... But I've found a reason to like you. You've made the same observation that I've made: sh!t floats!

Only losers win because their cause is championed by other losers under the guise of authority. Of course, they take offense to being called by their actual title: corrupt assholes!

I think our politicians would gain a lot more respect if they created Ministries that actually lived up to their name. Examples: Ministry of Justice would become Ministry of Corruption. Ministry of Foreign Affairs would become Ministry of World Domination. Ministry of Finance would become Ministry of Larceny. Ministry of Internal Affairs would become Ministry of Kickbacks and Scandal. Ministry of Corporate Affairs would become Ministry of the Righteous.
