So correct me if I'm wrong, but the PM is trying to stifle discussion about scrapping a woman's right to choose.

And you guys are against this because?

I think its a case of Pot Kettle Black.

Under Liberal Leadership the same thing has happened.

yup.... and Harper, to begin with, said it wouldn't happen under his watch. One more thing that Harper said wouldn't happen that has. Along with accountability and transparency, neither of which has happened either.

Not as controlled in my opinion.

Give Nunziata a call and see what he has to say. Ask some Liberals about the Whip and the gay marriage bill.

Please, this is nothing new in Ottawa. Meet the new Boss same as the Old Boss. But when the old Boss criticizes the new Boss for doing exactly what the old boss used to do. Well... That aint even a descent Who Song.

I beg to differ- The dance line is more in step, the chorus is all on key and the coordination downright eerie.
Must be Gene transplanting.
Compare the Chretien years to Harpers years and the difference is significant.

And you are wrong.
As I just said on another thread Chretien punted far more elected members out of the Liberal party than Harper has the Conservative party.
In a roughly equivalent time frame.

Chretien in my view was much more than controlling of his party than Harper has been.
And he dealt with the media far more effectively.
And thus spun internal party issues more effectively for public consumption.
Perception is everything.
And Chretien was a world class political knife fighter.

Muzzling elected dim-wits keeps the back rooms of all the parties hopping full time.
It's just business as usual.
Day in day out.

Me wrong- when it is perception? Really, look it up. Links would also be nice for how many Chretien turfed and why???
Why do you think we have such great sound bites from the days of Chretien- because they were not muzzled as tightly as Harper does.
As to the Cons they appear to have a tad more idiots than the Libs. But Harper has to sign off on them now. Talent is so scarce that some make it to Minister.

If the Conservative backbenchers were allowed to speak freely it would soon become clear what lightweights most of them are and Harper's majority would disappear. This is the only long lasting government in our history that's never had a major cabinet shuffle, and the reason is obvious: the people in cabinet are the best Harper's got. He has no bench strength.

That's only an issue if his starters are injured and can't play hurt -- or the opposition switches to a left handed pitcher.

For those that just saw this as an attack on Harper- who I have a strong dislike for, wrong again.
Those diehard Libs and NDPs types - well I have been waiting with the patience of a vulture for this to finally reach the news. The House was in recess for a tad. Your parties are equally guilty.

Well Justin here is you chance to differentiate and present a clear policy that you will adhere to. Or are you the same as Da and Chretien??

For those that Tweet- Well Tweet and ask Justin. He will be speaking in the House on Thursday.

Mark Warawa abandons push for Commons abortion vote | Canadian Politics | Canada | News | National Post

Meanwhile, the silence of opposition parties as Conservative backbenchers plead for greater freedom to speak their minds during a period reserved for MP statements in the Commons could be complicating the Speaker of the House’s decision on the issue.

‘It doesn’t surprise me that Conservative members with that kind of a policy background to support them would pursue this issue’

Nine Conservative MPs so far have come out to defend their parliamentary privilege of speaking their minds. The debate was sparked after British Columbia colleague Mark Warawa complained he was prevented from speaking during the 15-minute period allotted for statements before question period.

But NDP and Liberal MPs have been circumspect about the issue which would have an impact on the ability of backbenchers from all parties to carve out a small measure of autonomy. Speaker of the House Andrew Scheer, a Conservative, is being asked to rule on whether party whips should be allowed to approve or stifle statements made by MPs in the 15 minutes before the daily question period.

Without any opposition backing, Scheer could find it even more politically complicated to deliver a ruling that sides with what appears to be a small group of Conservatives against the wishes of his party’s leadership.

NDP House Leader Nathan Cullen, who has spoken on the issue in the Commons but hasn’t taken a firm position, said the NDP doesn’t vet MPs’ statements and thus doesn’t have a strong desire to intervene.
