Seems like a lot of pomp and expense for nothing of value. Thank the heavens they only sent 10.
That is what the British do. Did you watch any of the recent coronation ceremony and parade? Lots of pomp and bluster.
While I basically agree with you, having had more than my fill of ceremony in my life, it seems to have value for most. Can't think of a single culture in all history that doesn't do it.
Makes people forget that the government is wasting tax dollars. It is not much per person, per event. But when you add up all the events, it starts to make real money. And that does not include the costs that can't be quantified, like extra costs to businesses due to traffic disruptions.
Yes, traffic disruptions may inconvenience businesses but most also deliver people to the the event which will spend some money as well. In my mind these factors are likely a wash. This leaves the money the government sunk into it in the first place as the only factor.
Quite possible in the overall picture. However, this does nothing for the businesses that were taken to the cleaners. My sympathies lie more with the delivery companies, and especially the drivers that are paid piecework that lose out over a few restaurants and bars that make a couple of extra bucks.
I guess if your only outlook on life is cash terms, that's a valid point of view.
