It would be a declaration of war so then it would be open season on the invaders and any of the invading nations citizens that are in this country, wouldn't it?

Only Military Forces under Geneva Convention may use "Force" against other Military Forces or irregulars.

Civilians are not usually considered as "armed hostiles" unless fighting as an irregular force.

Enemy civilians may be detained under diplomatic status but not mistreated. NonCombatants are to be isolated and detained for the duration.

We do and those Americans best keep their paws off it. I saw a feature on the national yesterday about this and the mysterious subs that have been spotted. Any foreign sub should be treated as an act of aggression or war.

No. 1, I believe that your beef over Hans Island is with the Danish, not the Yanks, sorry old boy but the Yanks own their pie shape along logitudial lines to the North Pole ONLY ABOVE ALASKA, Canada owns her pie shaped likewise and so on. The lion's share of the Artic would belong to Russia.

I do know that there has been some controversy over the navigation rights of the far north, but that doesn't involve the ownership of the seabed or Outer Continental Shelf.

As the article says, the Vikings have returned!

HAH. That's hilarious. What we should do, is simply to start mining the area, put part of our military there, and when they come by, we shoot a couple of rounds at them, to scare them off, and we tell them "THIS LAND IS OCCUPIED. GO AWAY OR WE WILL SHOOT YOU AGAIN" lol.

Seriously though, if the area didn't have any appreciable ressources and if I were PM of Canada, i'd give up my claim over the North Pole. No one lives there. Its frozen year-round. That area is useless and another country would be happy to have such, empty and cold land.

I'd let it go to anyone, exept the USA. They already have Alaska. If they had the North Pole they'd surely invade, someday or another.

Gabre34

NB: Reverend Blair, unfortunetly we do not work in a world with "permissions" anymore. The UN is just something solely controled by the US and is of no appreciable help, as far as military issues are concerned.
If we want to keep this land, we will have to keep a somewhat large part of our military over there, and keep a constant watch over there.

Gee, let's give up the Far North to any one but those terrible Yanks, let Russia, Denmark and Iceland go to war over it and then we will bash the Yanks for no reason!

THE FLAG PLANTED ON HANS ISLAND WAS DANISH, NOT THE USA SO LETS BASH THE USA FOR LETTING THEM SNEAKY DANES CLAIM THE ISLAND.

Glad you aren't the PM, that was exactly the same sentiment expressed by President Andrew Johnson upon learning about the purchase of Alaska in 1867!

NB: The north pole is in the middle of the Artic Ocean, no land around!

ROTFLMAO

Defence Minister Peapod, Liberal Party Minister setting from Galiano Island Riding has endorsed the declaration of war against Denmark and Denmark replied by embargoing Tuborg Gold Beer from North America! Demark is calling upon the EU to protect their interest in Hans Island!

In Ottawa, Aid from St. Pierre et Miquuelon is pouring in stem the invasion worries in the North!

CNN reports that Canada has not asked the US for any help since Canadian sensiblities would be offended by the Yanks showing up and spoiling this war! GW Bush is still trying to find Nunavut on the Map and his military assitants are still trying to find their A-- from a hole in the snow.

Meanwhile, the Bookies in Vegas are laying 2 to 1 odds on Denmark.

It's the US who is most likely floating subs through the NW passage without permission, Martin...at least the most regularly. That degrades our claim to the waters and could allow them to drill for oil there.

It could also degrade our claim to northen land, allowing them to access oil and minerals. To claim ongoing sovereignty you have to using the area. We don't do that enough to guarantee our claims.

The big problem seems to be that while the north is becoming a little warmer... it is still cold as hell. Theres still lots of ice around and unless we had nuclear powered ships/subs we would still be at a disadvantage. I support increased funding for the military to a certain extent, however we don't have the money to match the Americans or Russians. However what we do have are people on the ground. The Canadian military runs a program up there known as the Canadian Rangers, It employs native Inuit hunters and fisherman (arctic experts) to keep an eye on things. Put some more money there and hire a few full time people and a couple of choppers to put up a show. Add in occasional patrols by Canadian warships our sovereignty in the north would be on firmer ground

I don't see why it's such a big deal (is it?). Suddenly when it comes to land, countries all tend to retreat to their nationalistic shell. But I could be wrong. Could the North Pole not get a special status in favor of the Native People living there, whether it is the northern part of Canada or Danish-occupied Greenland?
